  2. Half of West Yorkshire's NHS trusts fall behind on cancer carepublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Half of West Yorkshire's NHS health groups need to improve cancer care according to a new report.

    The NHS has an ambitious target of developing "world class" cancer care by 2020.

    The NHS England review looked at how all 209 local health boards - called clinical commissioning groups - were performing on waiting times, cancer survival, patient surveys and early diagnosis. 

    Across the country, only 29 were classed as performing well enough to meet the ambitions set out in the 2015 cancer plan. 

    That called for improvements in care so that by 2020 another 30,000 lives would be saved.

  4. Bradford man died 'a month before 111th birthday'published at 17:02 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Bradford man Karam Chand, died on Friday after 90 years of marriage to his wife Kartari.

    He passed away a month before his 111th birthday, which you might think would make him one of the oldest people in the country. 

    Earlier this year though we reported on the UK's oldest person, Gladys Hooper, who died at the age of 113.

    And last month there was the story of a man from Indonesia who believes he is 145 years old.

  6. CCTV pictures released of missing manpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    New CCTV pictures have been released of a man from Wakefield who has been missing since 20 September.

    Tim Mercer, 50, was last seen at the Tesco Express store on Stanley Road at about 18:00.

  7. Castleford Tigers: Matt Cook forward extends contractpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Castleford forward Matt Cook has signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the Super League side until 2018, with a club option for a further year.

    Cook made 29 appearances for Tigers in 2016 to help them finish fifth in Super League at the end of the Super 8s.

    The 29-year-old signed from London ahead of the 2015 season, having also played for Bradford and Hull KR.

  8. Homeless protest to move to site of old International Swimming Poolpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    More on the homeless people in Leeds who've been camping on ground in the middle of Leeds city centre. 

    They now agreed to move to another part of the city.

    They've now agreed to dismantle their camp and move after a court hearing. They made the decision after Leeds City Council applied for a possession order on Park Square, saying it wanted to use it during this week's Night Light event. 

    The group now say they'll live on the old International Pool site after striking a temporary deal with the council.

  9. Defibrillator stolen in Halifaxpublished at 15:15

    A  defibrillator has been stolen in Halifax after a community minibus was broken into.

    It happened at Shibden Park last Tuesday, between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

    Former West Yorkshire MP Ed Balls says he was traumatised by a blunder he made during his first dance on Strictly Come Dancing.

    The ex-shadow chancellor and his professional partner Katya Jones performed the waltz for their debut a week ago. 

    Writing in the Radio Times, he's admitted his mind went blank - and he missed a step and panicked. 

    This week - he survived a viewer vote, and stayed in the show.

    She’s been hailed as “the most versatile pianist of her age” and “one of the most sympathetic accompanists". Now at the age of 96 pianist Margaret Dutton, external, of Almondbury, has retired after 16 years as accompanist to Huddersfield’s U3A Ladies’ Choir – just one of the many musical “jobs” she had undertaken over the years.

  13. New Pontefract pool plans could have 'massive impact' says GPpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Plans to replace three sports centres in the Wakefield district with a new £15m complex in Pontefract could have a "massive impact" on fitness, a doctor has warned.

    Wakefield Council plans to eventually close Knottingley Sports Centre, Castleford and Pontefract pools.

    They would be replaced by the Pontefract Park complex (artist's impression pictured) with a 10-lane swimming pool and sports facilities.

    Doctor Karen Forshaw said: "I do think there will be a massive impact on people's abilities to exercise."

    Les Shaw, council cabinet member, said: "Updating the current pools is not an option."

  14. Man stabbed in Tongpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    A 19-year-old man was stabbed in Bradford in the early hours of this morning.

    It happened just after midnight in the Tong area of the city. The victim suffered injuries to his left leg and one of his hands.

    West Yorkshire Police said there was an incident at a house on Holme Lane and three men aged 30, 39 and 41 were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

    The 19-year-old man is in a stable condition in hospital.

  15. Homeless agree to move on from Park Lanepublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    A group of homeless people who were camping in Park Square in Leeds to protest about how they are treated have agreed to move their tents.

    The move follows a court hearing this morning after Leeds City Council applied for a possession order to clear the area and prepare for this week's Light Night event. 

    Those involved in the Park Square protest say the council is not doing enough for those seeking shelter.  

  16. 'More new homes than necessary' being built in Leedspublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Campaigners trying to protect greenbelt land are accusing Leeds City Council of planning to build more new homes than necessary.

    The council says 66,000 homes should be built in the city before 2028. 

    The Yorkshire Greenspace Alliance says new census data shows they've over-estimated how many people will be living there.

  18. Jo Cox MP death: Murder accused Thomas Mair refuses to enter pleaspublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    A man accused of killing the Labour MP Jo Cox has refused to enter pleas as he appeared in court.

    Thomas Mair, 53, from Birstall, remained silent when asked to plead on four charges relating to Mrs Cox's death at the Old Bailey.

    Mrs Cox, 41, who was married with two young children, was shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire, in June.

    In the light of Mr Mair's silence the judge ordered that not guilty pleas should be entered on his behalf.

    The defendant is accused of murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon - a dagger.
