  3. Ann Maguire murder: Report recommendationspublished at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    Ann MaguireImage source, PA

The Leeds Safeguarding Children's Board review says Cornick spoke of an "adrenaline rush" and "good times" after stabbing his Spanish teacher.

He was detained for a minimum of 20 years after admitting murder.

Cornick, who was 15 at the time of the murder, told the report's author, Nick Page, he had gone to his Spanish class in "a red mist, not conscious of his surroundings".

    Among the report's recommendations are:

    • Information about pupils should be recorded and shared
    • Schools should emphasise to all children and young people they can share concerns for another pupil or teacher's welfare with staff
    • The speed of social media means information, sometimes inaccurate, puts pressure on decision-making
    • In responding to a critical incident in a school, or other such organisations, agencies should ensure head teachers receive full information as well as individual support
    • Leeds City Council should consider recommending that national quality standards for the commissioning of reviews of critical incidents be established

Julie Banwell, from Huddersfield, says her autistic son texted her threatening to take his own life because he was struggling so much in class. .

The mum-of-three says her 11-year-old is being left in limbo because he can't get into a specialist school  as he's still being assessed.

Kirklees Council is currently looking at reducing the number of school places at these kind of units because they say there's not enough demand for them

    Quote Message

I went up to school and I showed them the messages and then they believed he actually needed some support. He's getting some support now but not the appropriate level that he needs."

  6. 160-year-old yak spotted on streets of Leeds...oh, and a bearpublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    Nick Wilmshurst
    BBC Local Live, Leeds

It's not often you see a 160-year-old Yak in the middle of Leeds (although if you hang around the bus station long enough...) but that's exactly what happened yesterday near Millennium Square.

Some of the stuffed animals from Leeds City Museum have had to be removed for maintenance, and in this Yak's case it definitely needs it because fur-eating moth larvae have been found on it.

The yak first arrived in Leeds from Tibet in 1862 and was sent by explorer Colonel Edmund Smyth.

Other animals being treated include the bear pictured below. Is it me or does it look a little like he's being escorted home after a few too many ales?

"Ger off me, ya don't kna anyfing abart me, I juz wanna gha back inside."

    Quote Message

A three metre yak isn’t something you see every day on the streets of Leeds and it certainly turned quite a few heads. The taxidermy collection is always really popular and it's great people are so keen to know more."

    EfitImage source, West Yorkshire Police

He's alleged to have approached two 16-year-old girls in Thorn Avenue, Heaton and asked them where they were going.

He's then said to have grabbed one of them by the wrist, but lost his grip when the other girl hit him with her bag.

He is believed to be about 40 to 45 years old and was wearing a black leather zipped jacket and blue jeans.

    Quote Message

We are keen to speak to this man about his actions, which clearly caused some concern to the girls involved. While this matter is being treated as an attempted abduction, I would like to stress there have been no further reports of similar incidents in the area.

The report has been published by the Leeds Safeguarding Children's Board and has concluded that no-one could have predicted or prevented the murder.

    Quote Message

Will's school friends and peers considered that he had a dark sense of humour and could talk very negatively and unkindly about people he did not like. None of the young people in the class or friendship group had believed that he would actually carry out an assault."

A Leeds Safeguarding Children's Board review says there had been no "credible warning signs" that could have been picked up by the school about Cornick's behaviour.
