    A minute's silence will be held before the next Hallam FC under-15 match as a tribute to Sheffield's Scott Marsden who died after collapsing at a kickboxing contest at the weekend.

    The 14-year-old was taken to hospital after needing urgent medical attention during an English title fight on Saturday night at the Leeds Martial Arts College in Morley, Leeds. 

    The teenager had played for Hallam FC for a number of years and the club says he was a massively popular member of the team.

    Why would anyone want to do this? 

    Thieves have stolen bulbs and knocked down fences at the dementia-friendly garden at Sandal Library.

    But volunteers say they'll continue with their work on the garden despite the thefts.

    If you're out walking in the Sprotbrough area of Doncaster, then keep you eyes peeled for a rather unusual bird!

    It's after a member of the public reported seeing an ostrich-type bird in woodland at about 15:00 yesterday.  

    Police say it could be aggressive and are warning people not to approach it.

    The 24-year-old last was seen at the Forest Lodge hospital unite on Thursday 2 March and the photo above was taken on the day of his disappearance.

    South Yorkshire Police say they're growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.

    Thieves have stolen the lifebelts that are kept around the edge of Waterloo Lake at Roundhay Park.

    Leeds City Council say over the past month about 15 of the belts have been stolen, at a cost of about £600 to replace them. 

    The council say that the theft of the life-saving equipment has got worse in the last couple of weeks and that someone could drown in the lake.

  9. Dragon's Den-style process for Sheffield mental heath services published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    This Friday people using mental health services in South Yorkshire will get to  decide what projects will get council funding, external  with a Dragon's Den-style pitch by groups.

    Sheffield City Council say that people will see five voluntary and community groups pitching for a share of a £40,000 pot, in a Dragon's Den-style process.

    It's part of the authority's "new approach" to funding mental health projects to help with conditions such as anxiety and depression.

  10. Rail update: Trains between Selby and Hull returning to normal published at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    Train services between Selby and Hull are back to normal this lunchtime. 

    Damage to signalling cables caused major disruption to passengers. 

    British Transport Police are investigating if "thieves or vandals" are to blame for the damaged cables at Hessle East junction near Hull.

    Sheffield's Masters champion Danny Willett is among those who've welcomed the decision by "the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers" to allow women members at Muirfield for the first time.

    After 17 years of serving the Aire Valley and Lothersdale, Councillor Patricia Fairbank has announced she's stepping down due to ill health.

    She's been a member of Craven District Council since being elected in 2000.

    She says it's been a privilege to serve the area but "due to continuing ill health I'm finding it difficult to carry out my duties. It is best for the ward if I step down".

    Fire crews in Wetherby have been called out to rescue a dog from the River Wharfe.

    It happened this morning at about 10:46, when the dog fell into the water near Lodge Lane in the town.

    A fire crew from Wetherby went along to help and we're happy to report that the dog is now safe and well.

    There were more than 11,000 victims of identity fraud in our region last year.

    The fraud prevention service CIFAS has announced there's been an 8% increase in crimes recorded in Yorkshire and Humber . 

    In 2015 the organisation named Leeds as having a real problem with identity fraud up, recording it nearly 60% up on the year before.

  15. Fashionable Yorkshire exhibit celebrates 500 years of female dress published at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    More than 500 years of female fashion will go on display in a new exhibition . Fashionable Yorkshire at Lotherton Hall near Leeds showcases the outfits and the stories of the women behind them.

    Highlights include the embroidered jacket made in the 1600s for Margaret Layton who married a wealthy Yorkshire landowner.

    The show includes modern items, such as contemporary woollen flat caps made in Yorkshire by designer Rhian Kempadoo Millar.

    The exhibition runs until the end of the year.  

  16. Yorkshire's unemployment figures hold steadypublished at 11:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    The latest unemployment figures have been released, and our region is holding steady with the rate standing at 5.3%.

    It means that in Yorkshire and the Humber, there are currently 144,000 people out of work.

    But the UK's unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level since the summer of 1975 at 4.7%. 

    However official figures for the three months to the end of January show the number of people on zero hours contracts increased to 905,000. 

  17. West Yorkshire MP pays tribute to kickboxerpublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    Tributes are being paid to a 14-year-old kickboxer from Sheffield who died after collapsing during a national title bout in Leeds.

    Scott Marsden was taken to hospital after needing urgent medical attention during the fight on Saturday, but later died.

  18. Doctor who cracked cholera to be honoured in Yorkpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    A memorial's being unveiled today in honour of a pioneering Yorkshire Doctor.

    In the mid-1800s it was assumed that cholera was airborne, but Dr John Snow identified the disease as waterborne. 

    Snow was able to prove his theory in August 1854 when a cholera outbreak occurred in Soho. He was able to identify a water pump as the source of the disease. 

    The handle of the pump was removed and cases of cholera immediately began to diminish.
