    City of York Council has been awarded £224,000 to help speed up the development of York Central , the city's largest brownfield site. 

    The money has come from the Department for Communities and Local Government.

    Plans for the 72-hectare site behind the railway station include the building of up to 2,500 homes, as well as new retail and office spaces.

  5. Big plan step nearer for Gulliver's park at Rotherhampublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    Around 250 full-time equivalent jobs are set to be created when a multi-million pound Gulliver's theme park finally opens in South Yorkshire.

    Approval to build on the Pithouse West opencast colliery site, near Rother Valley Park was granted by Rotherham councillors earlier.

    The plan includes a theme park, adventure centre, camping facilities, woodland lodges, two hotels and a holiday village.

    The secretary of state for Communities and Local government Sajid Javid has now said he doesn't require further investigation of the plans.

    This is a plan of how the multi-million pound, 250 acre site will look when it opens in 2020.

    A study by the University of York has concluded that great apes, including chimpanzees, have absolutely no appreciation of music.

    The research involved creating a "chimpanzee jukebox" that allowed chimps to select their favourite classical, pop or rock songs, or simply tune in to silence. 

    But none of them showed any preference for any kind of music.

    Maybe they should have played them something by The Gorillaz!

    Let's get the latest now on the progress of the Mirage IV former nuclear bomber, external .

    You may remember the 77-foot long warplane is due to arrive in North Yorkshire later today as it completes a journey that started earlier this week in Paris. 

    It's been gifted to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York by the French government.

    Well we've just heard that everything is going according to plan and it's expected to start the final part of the journey from Portsmouth to York at 09.15 this morning.

    South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) must now wait for the outcome of a two day hearing at the High Court in London brought by his former chief constable. 

    Ex police chief David Crompton has asked the court for a judicial review into the decision taken by PCC Dr Alan Billings to remove him from his position.

    Detectives investigating the death of a 19-year-old man found in an abandoned building at the weekend are appealing for information.

    Thomas Rhodes was found at around 16:15 BST on Sunday, 26 March, in Hallam Towers on Manchester Road in Fulwood.  

    A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of "multiple injuries consistent with a fall".

    City of York Council is being urged to write to the government over plans to sell off two army sites in the city.

    At a meeting tonight the council's chief executive will be asked by Labour councillors to tell the Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, the authority opposes the closure of Imphal and Strensall barracks. 

    Queen Elizabeth Barracks at Strensall are due to shut down within four years and Imphal Barracks on Fulford Road by 2031.

    Around 1,400 jobs are due to be lost with 866 armed forces families being affected.

  19. Community Support Officer confronted by knifeman who stole his bike published at 06:47 British Summer Time 30 March 2017

    Police have arrested a man after a Police Community Support Officer had his bike stolen at knifepoint in York.

    The police cycle was stolen in the Clifton area yesterday afternoon. 

    A search began in the area and there was a significant police presence. 

    The bike was eventually recovered.
