  2. Analysis: Sheffield Council now under no overall controlpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    James Vincent
    Political Editor BBC Look North

Sheffield is no longer ruled by one single party after the Labour Party lost a number of seats. BBC political editor James Vincent explains:

    Sheffield counting

We knew Labour needed to lose seven seats to lose overall control of Sheffield Council. Not many thought it was that likely. It just happened and more - they lost eight.

The council leader Bob Johnson has lost his seat in Hillsborough - he only got the job in January.

They've lost seats to the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and for the first time in years there is now a Conservative councillor on Sheffield City Council.

There is also a referendum to be counted on Monday about how the council is run.

With a smaller majority, setting up new committees to make decisions might get messy.

    James Vincent
    Political Editor BBC Look North

Labour are getting close to losing control in Sheffield.

At the start of the day seven losses would have seen them lose their majority - and they're getting close to that.

The council leader Bob Johnson has lost his seat in Hillsborough - he only got the job in January.

They've lost seats to the Lib Dems, the Greens and for the first time in 20 years - there is now a Conservative councillor on Sheffield City Council.

There are 84 councillors in Sheffield altogether, so a third of those plus one, make 29 councillors being elected this year across the city.

In total, 43 seats are needed for a majority, with Labour currently holding 45 seats.

For the past decade, Labour has had control in Sheffield, but things have been getting closer.

Here are a couple of the latest results:

The city is one to watch this afternoon, according to BBC political editor James Vincent. If Labour loses three council seats there it loses overall control.

He explains: "With a referendum on how the council makes decisions to be counted on Monday - that might be really, really important for how things get done in Sheffield.

"If Sheffield Council has no party with a majority and a new system of governance to set up - things could be messy."

  12. Analysis: Pandemic not impacting Doncaster mayor turnoutpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    James Vincent
    Political Editor BBC Look North

Labour's Ros Jones has been re-elected as Doncaster's mayor after standing for the position for a third time.

But how did the coronavirus pandemic affect voting turnout? BBC political editor James Vincent explains:

    Ros Jones at the count

In 2013, Ros Jones and Labour won by a nose - just 639 votes. In 2017, it was a one-horse race - the winning margin was 19,056.

This third victory is somewhere in between at just over 10,000 votes.

Interesting that the turnout in the Doncaster mayoral election was 28.05% - in the last election in 2017 it was 29.35%.

There were fears about a low turnout this time because of the pandemic but it is broadly the same.

And it looks like the number of postal ballots issued is also similar.

The pandemic doesn't have seemed to have made a big difference to the mechanics of voting.

  17. Labour safe but pushed by Conservativespublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

Labour's Ros Jones was re-elected mayor in Doncaster - but this time she required second preference votes to get over the line.

Ms Jones polled 27,669 first preference votes - almost 10,000 more than Conservative challenger James Hart.

However, that fell just short of the 50% needed from a turnout of 63,183.

That mean second preference votes for Ms Jones and Mr Hart were counted.

Ms Jones recorded just over 3,500 while Mr Hart's tally was just over 3,000.

That gave Ms Jones a total of 31,232 votes compared to the Conservative's 21,019.

In the 2017 election, Ms Jones scored 51% of first preference votes with 32,631 ballots and didn't need the second count for victory.

The Conservative candidate George Jabbour recorded a total of 13,575 votes.

What will that mean for the council elections? Local Democracy Reporter George Torr has his own thoughts:

Ms Jones, who was supported by Labour MP Ed Miliband, said she would "fight for every town and village".

Speaking after the result, Jones said: “I would like to thank those residents of Doncaster who have voted for me.

"I am privileged and humbled to lead our beloved borough as the Labour mayor for a third term."

Her nearest challenger, Conservative James Hart, received 21,019 votes in total with 28.4% of the vote in the first round.

It's the third time she's stood for the position she's held since 2013.

Ms Jones who received 31,232 first and second preference votes has vowed "to lead Doncaster's recovery as coronavirus restrictions start to be eased".

Conservative candidate, the former Tickhill and Wadworth councillor, James Hart, received the second largest number of votes with 21,019.

Speaking after the result was announced Ros Jones said: "Doncaster is a wonderful borough, but it can be so much more if we all work together.

"I promise I will work for all our communities and continue to fight for our borough to make it a place where people want to live, visit, raise their children and leave no one behind."

Counts for most of the other elections in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are expected to start later this morning.
