  1. Listen: New crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Scarboroughpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

    Mike Kemp
    Reporter, BBC Radio York

New powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in Scarborough are aimed at allowing people to enjoy public spaces, officials say.

A protection order is set to be introduced in the town this summer, targeting drinking on the streets, urinating in public and possession of so-called legal highs.

There were over 3,000 anti-social incidents in the town last year.

I've been asking people there about what they've seen - and whether this is needed:

The decision to grant a new licence with conditions to Spearmint Rhino, on Brown Street, was made despite 97 objections.

Granting the renewal at a meeting last night, the council attached the following conditions:

    • No leafleting
    • A quarterly inspection of the premises to be carried out by the Licensing Service
    • No signage depicting Spearmint Rhino when the venue is closed
  3. Watch: More than 50 bank branches close in Yorkshire in one yearpublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

Is there still a branch of your bank near where you live or work in Yorkshire?

We already know that 10 NatWest bank branches across West and North Yorkshire are due to close by the end of this year.

The bank's branches in Adel in Leeds, Bingley, Bradford, Settle, Haxby in York, Otley, Selby, Knaresborough, Thirsk and Tadcaster are due to shut by the end of October.

But did you know that the number of banks in the whole of Yorkshire has fallen by more than a quarter in the last five years?

Here are a few statistics - and a clever map of coins to explain more:

  4. 'Poor little critter': Chaos-causing pig under police protectionpublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

We mentioned earlier about the escaped pig which caused chaos on the M62 last night.

Yes, it was one solitary porker which caused major delays and tailbacks of up to 3.5 miles for at least an hour.

Thankfully, it was eventually caught by police, but what was the porcine interloper's eventual fate? Here's the answer:

  5. Watch: Spy in the cab - Police use HGV to catch drivers using phonespublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

Police in North Yorkshire are using an unmarked lorry to try and catch drivers using their phones behind the wheel.

The truck gives traffic officers the ability to see into vehicles and spot offenders.

Last month, the punishment for driving while using a mobile was increased to six penalty points:

  6. Watch: Frontline care being 'strangled' - Sheffield care home bosspublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

    Jenny Eells
    Reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

Yesterday, we were talking about the worrying standard of care being given in South Yorkshire's care homes.

A study has found that more than a third of homes in Sheffield and Barnsley require improvement or are inadequate.

After hearing this, one South Yorkshire care home boss got in touch with the BBC to hit back, saying inspectors are "strangling" frontline work.

Andrew Selwood runs Rosebank in Sheffield, which itself was said by inspectors to need improvements:

  8. Steam loco hits a ton on main line for first time since 1960spublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

The East Coast Main Line (ECML) played host to a very special guest last night as testing started to see how fast steam trains can safely travel along the route.

    Tornado

Tornado, Britain's newest steam locomotive, was used for the tests which are being done due to congestion and changes to the network, meaning longer journeys for heritage-style travel.

Steam engines are currently limited to 75mph on the ECML, but the idea is that they'll instead be able to travel at up to 100mph - hence the testing.

The Tornado footplate crew behind this very special journey were, from left to right, Graeme Bunker from the A1 steam trust, fireman Dave Proctor, driver Steve Hanczar and traction inspector Jim Smith:

BBC Look North's Tom Ingall followed Tornado's progress and he says it was "a fairly historic evening, and quite a quick one" - with a steam train reaching 100mph on the ECML for the first time since 1967. That moment was, of course, caught on camera:

  10. Lindsay Rimer murder: Police still seek 'golden' cluepublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

    Clive Settle
    BBC Radio Leeds News

Exactly 22 years after the discovery of her body, detectives in West Yorkshire say they're still waiting for a vital clue to solve the murder of Lindsay Jo Rimer in Hebden Bridge.

The 13-year-old's body was pulled from the Rochdale Canal on 12 April 1995, five months after she disappeared in November 1994.

Police say they're convinced the key to her murder is still within the Calderdale community.

However, the inquiry has stretched as far as Canada, where forensic scientists have been using the latest techniques to build a DNA profile of the killer.

Here, though, detectives say they await a so-called "golden nugget" of information which will solve the crime and end more than two decades of pain and anguish for the Rimer family.

  12. Listen: Fears over Sheffield school plan for old landfill sitepublished at 07:41 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

Plans to build a new secondary school in Sheffield on what used to be a landfill site have been described as an "unnecessary risk".

The school, planned for the car park of the old Bannerdale Centre site on Carterknowle Road (artist's impression pictured), will create much-needed new school places, the council says.

But campaigner Mike Hodgson says there isn't strong proof there's a serious need for new school places in the area and he says the land isn't safe to build on:

The decision goes before the planning committee next week, with a recommendation that permission is granted.

  13. Traffic and travel: East Coast Main Line back to normalpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

    BBC News Travel

After two days of problems on the East Coast Main Line between Doncaster and Peterborough, it looks as though things are getting back to normal.

Problems with the overhead lines at the start of the week meant trains were having to run very slowly for a five-mile stretch on the route:

  14. Pigs might not fly...but they can still cause chaospublished at 07:09 British Summer Time 12 April 2017

Were you stuck in traffic on the M62 in West Yorkshire yesterday evening? Still don't know what the cause of the all the delays was? Well, it was a pig...

The motorway was brought to a standstill at about 19:00 on Tuesday after the porcine interloper was spotted on the M62 between junctions 28 and 29, south of Leeds.

Traffic was held in both directions for more than an hour while the animal was recovered near Tingley, causing a 3.5 mile queue eastbound and a 1.8 mile tailback westbound.

This is what could be seen through the motorway cameras:

Largely cloudy to start with outbreaks of rain for most.

    Weather graphic

By early afternoon, cloud should have started to break up allowing some sunny spells and isolated showers to develop. Winds will stay brisk, making it feel rather cool in exposure.

Through the evening any showers will die away leaving some prolonged cloud breaks, allowing it to get cold enough for a touch of frost.
