    League One champions Sheffield United are set to re-sign striker Ched Evans from Chesterfield.

    BBC Radio Sheffield reports the Blades have agreed a fee of £500k with the Spireites, who have been relegated to League Two.

    Evans, 28, joined Chesterfield last summer and scored seven goals in 29 appearances this season.

    He scored 42 goals in 103 league appearances in his first spell at Bramall Lane.

    In October 2016 Evans was found not guilty, following a retrial, of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011.

    He was initially convicted in 2012 and served two-and-a-half years of a five-year prison sentence, but that conviction was quashed in April 2016.

    A last ditch attempt is being made to try to save Scarborough's Futurist Theatre from the bulldozers.

    Campaigners say they need raise £10,000 to pay for a judicial review, into how the decision was made to knock the building down.

    The demolition is expected to cost up to £4m.

    But people living in the area above the building fear their homes could be at risk by destabilising the cliff.

    All the money raised will go to the Sheffield Children's Hospital, where Damian's son was cared for after an accident.

  5. Heartbeat books author has died, family saypublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    The Yorkshire author whose books inspired the Heartbeat TV series has died, his family has said.

    Peter Walker, who wrote under the name Nicholas Rhea, died at his home in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire.

    His books were the basis for the ITV series that featured the work and lives of a North York Moors village, police officers and local characters.

    Mr Walker's funeral will be held on Friday in Ampleforth.

    Police in Scarborough have arrested three men on suspicion of the supply and production of a class B drug, after serving a warrant at a property on Beaconsfield Street in Scarborough. 

    Officers conducted a search of the property and found " a large growth of cannabis" in the roof space of the house. 

    A 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of producing a class B drug and possession with intent to supply a class B drug. 

    A 25-year-old man from Scarborough and a 27-year-old man from Scalby were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production and supply of a class B drug.

    Police inquiries are continuing.

    The Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, says there will be an inquiry in to the "Battle of Orgreave" if he becomes Prime Minister.

    Campaigners have been demanding an inquiry in to clashes between police and striking miners which took place at the Orgreave coke plant near Rotherham in 1984. 

    Last year, a former policeman who was there claimed officers had been ordered to use "as much force as possible".

    A man and a woman who stopped to help someone they thought was in trouble have been threatened with a knife and had their car stolen.

    It happened in the early hours of yesterday morning on Knowles Hill Road when the pair came across a car parked in the middle of the road.

    The victims assumed the man in the car needed help, but when they stopped he leaned through his window and got out a knife and told the driver, a 21-year-old woman to get out of the car.

    Another two suspects then came up to the car and forced an 18-year-old man out too. All three men then got into the car and drove off.

    A North Yorkshire woman, who's husband was killed by driver in the Yorkshire Dales, has welcomed tougher penalties for some speeding offences in England and Wales.

    Drivers can now be fined one and a half times their weekly wage for the worst offences, that means driving at over 50mph in a 30mph zone or over 100mph on a motorway.

    The husband of Lorraine Allaway, from the Yorkshire Dales, was killed when he was hit by a car near Settle. She says she welcomes the news:

    A man from Bradford who was taking part in the London marathon ended the race in a nail biting finish yesterday. But it it had nothing to do with his time, he popped the question to his girlfriend!

    James Goodall ran the distance with an engagement ring tied to him, and when he saw his girlfriend at the finish line, he got down on one knee and asked the big question.

    James ran the race in a time of 3hrs 48mins 29secs, but I bet the time in between him asking and Beckey Oakes answering seemed longer!

  14. Selby man arrested after 'large amount of drugs' found in carpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    A 36-year-old man from Selby's been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, after officers stopped his vehicle on the A645 near Hensall.

    Police conducted a search of the BMW car and seized what they are describing as "a large amount of cash and drugs from within the vehicle."

    The man's been released under investigation while enquiries continue. The arrest took place at 14:45 on Friday.  

    Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

    This is the scene a short while ago on York Road in Leeds where a police car has crashed with a taxi.

    It happened on the Leeds-bound side of the A64.

    There's no suggestion that the police in the car were involved in a pursuit. 

    Traffic is very slow in the area after the crash which happened just after 11:00 this morning.

    No one was injured and no arrests have been made.

    A project which has led to more youngsters brushing their teeth in Sheffield, is to be rolled out to an extra 40 nurseries and primary schools across the city.

    The tooth brushing scheme provides free brushes and paste, as well as training and information on how to teach children about oral care.

    Figures from Public Health England show that in Sheffield, the average five-year-old has one decayed, missing or filled tooth.

    That's slightly above the national average.

    Three North Yorkshire women who've made contributions to their local communities have received British Empire Medals.

    The medal is awarded for "sustained and notable contribution to the community."

    Trudi Jeannette Abadi, of Leeming Bar, received hers for services to law and order, Michelle Beckett, from Harrogate, was awarded hers for services to disadvantaged people in the UK and abroad and Jennifer Caswell Hildyard, of York, was rewarded for services to the community in York. 

    They each received their medal at County Hall, Northallerton, from Mr Barry Dodd CBE, The Queen’s Representative, The Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

    In other words, using your patrol car to stop another vehicle.

    West Yorkshire Police released this picture in the early hours of this morning after the driver of a Ford failed to stop in Seacroft in Leeds.

    Officers say that both the driver and passenger were arrested and that the police helicopter was used too.
