    It happened on Station Road in Fenay Bridge at lunchtime on Saturday 25 March. 

    A man entered the a house and stole a gold Summit watch and a gold pocket watch before the owner of the house caught him in the act.

    The histories of Yorkshire people are being brought to life at the North Yorkshire County Record Office this month as part of the national Museums at Night festival.

    Called Archives at Dusk, many different Yorkshire lives will be on show, including life in Alum works along the Yorkshire coast:

    Conscripts, like Buffalo, a 25-year-old hawker accused of stealing three fleeces of wool and sentenced to one month's hard labour in 1871, are also pictured:

    The story of Samuel Butler, the founder of theatres throughout the north, will also be told and there'll be a recreation of the Scarborough Pageant of 1912.

  8. Retailers announced for regenerated Halifax Piece Hallpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Earlier we told you how the man in charge of the Piece Hall restoration in Halifax has said the future of the building is "the future of the town".

    More details of which shops are going to be taking up residence in the Grade I-listed former cloth trading hall have now been released. It reopens in August.

    Nine companies have been announced, including a branch of Halifax's very own Harvey's department stores.

    The people behind Friends of Ham in Leeds also plan to open a new restaurant and a record shop/cafe there, too.

    Labour has held both its seats in the Edenthorpe ward.

  10. Local elections 2017: Final results for North Yorkshire County Councilpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    That's all the wards now declared for North Yorkshire County Council.

    One Selby Barlby seat has been gained by Karl Arthur for the Conservative Party, while Labour's Steph Duckett has retained his seat.

    Meanwhile, Esrick, Mid Craven, and North Craven are all Conservative holds, with South Craven remaining Independent.

    The number of people voting across all North Yorkshire districts in this year's local elections seems to be up compared to 2013.

    Here are the figures from a some of the wards which have so far declared:

    • Hambleton: 36.02 % (31.6 % 2013)
    • Harrogate: 36.35 % (33.15 % 2013)
    • Richmondshire: 33.4 % (33.15 % 2013)
    • Ryedale: 37.96 % (31.46% 2013)
    • Selby: 32.63 % (27.33 % 2013)
    • Scarborough: 32.12 % (30.16 % 2013)  
  12. Recognition for woman who stopped 'vicious attack'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    A woman from Barnsley who risked her life in order to help someone who was being attacked by a man with a pickaxe handle has been recognised for her bravery.

    Nadine Boids, from Elsecar, was woken up by a fight outside her house in November last year. She ran outside where 29-year-old Neil Bailey was attacking a 25-year-old man with a large pickaxe handle.  

    She shouted at Bailey and pushed him away from the man - which police say diffused the situation and led to Bailey running off. The victim was left with a broken leg.

    Bailey, of Gray Street, Elsecar, Barnsley, was sent to jail for three years at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday.

    A fire at a house in Huddersfield is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette being put into a wheelie bin, it's been revealed.

    West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's investigation team has advised people against storing their bins near the windows and doors of their homes.

  17. North Yorkshire election results latestpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Following Thursday's local elections, the Conservative Party has retained control of North Yorkshire County Council and has increased its majority. 

    The party took 45 seats at the last election, and already stands at 50 seats today with eight results still to come in.

    Five of the seven North Yorkshire counts are now complete.

    Here are the latest results:

    • Chris Pearson has held Selby for the Conservatives
    • David Jeffels has held Derwent Valley for the Conservatives

    With under 10 seats left to be announced, this is the current state-of-play on North Yorkshire Council:

    • 50 Conservative
    • 3 Liberal Democrat
    • 8 Independent
    • 3 Labour

    The Conservatives have now won the majority of seats on North Yorkshire County council and therefore retain control of the authority.

    The latest results are:

    • In Selby, Cliff Lunn has been elected for the Conservatives
    • The Conservatives have taken both Knaresborough seats from the Liberal Democrats, with Zoe Metcalfe and Nicola Faris-Wilson both elected
    • Joe Plant has held Whitby for the Conservatives
    • Roberta Swiers has held Scarborough for the Conservatives
    • Derek Bastiman, has held for Conservatives in Scalby and the Coast divisions

    All results are now in for the 15 divisions of the Harrogate district.

    • The first result is in from Scarborough where Janet Jefferson, Independent, has held the Castle seat
    • Conservative David Blades has held onto his Romanby and Bloomfield seat
    • Annabel Wilkinson retains the Swale seat for the Conservatives
    • Peter Sowray, Conservative, has held his Easingwold seat 
    • In the Esk Valley, Clive Graham Pierson, has held his Conservative seat
    • David Hugil has held his seat for the Conservatives in North Hambleton
    • Gillian Quinn, Conservative, has been elected in Mid Craven
    • The first result is in for the Selby area count, where Don Mackay has made an Independent gain
    • Andy Solloway, Independent, has been elected in Skipton West
    • Mel Hobson has gained a seat for the Conservatives in Sherburn-in-Elmet

    The counts for the Hambleton, Ryedale and Richmonshire areas are now complete.

    In Richmondshire there are three Conservative councillors and one independent councillor.

    Ryedale now has five Conservatives councillors and one independent councillor

    Hambleton has 10 conservative Councillors and one Liberal Democrat.

    Today is the final day that the paper £5 note can be legally accepted.

    From tomorrow shops can refuse them, although banks should exchange them for you beyond this weekend.

    Apparently there are still 155 million paper fivers still in circulation and I've been asking the people of Barnsley if they've still got a wad of them in their wallets and purses:
