    The confectionery giant Nestle has lost its latest attempt to register the shape of its four-fingered KitKat as a trademark in the UK.

    The Court of Appeal rejected its effort to overturn an earlier High Court ruling.

    Nestle insists the shape of its four finger KitKat is iconic, but attempts to trademark the design have been fiercely resisted by its rival Cadbury for many years.

    The UK high court said last year that the bar was not distinctive enough to merit protection.

    A spokesperson for Nestle said they are "disappointed by the Court of Appeal judgment" and the firm is now "considering next steps."

  2. Ilkley Moor fire caused by 'careless disposal of a barbecue'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Firefighters think a 20,000m² fire on Ilkley Moor last week was caused by a barbecue.

    West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say that after investigating the cause of the blaze they believe it was started by the "careless disposal of a barbecue".

    Fire officers are warning that people should not be having barbecues on the moorland.

    Ashley Kilvington, 28, was reported missing yesterday from his home in Tinshill.  

    Police say he has links to the Preston, Blackpool and Manchester areas, and is thought to be in one of those areas or possibly in Leeds.

    More now on a sex abuse compensation case.

    Sheffield City Council will have to pay £91,000 in compensation to a former employee after he was sexually abused by a council official in the 80s.

    In December last year Roger Dodds (pictured) admitted indecently assaulting four men and a young boy. The ex-council boss forced teenagers to engage in sex acts to get grant payments.

    He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February,since his conviction, a number of other people have come forward alleging they too were abused by him.

    Richard Rowe, who waived his right to anonymity, successfully sued the council who allowed Dodds to retire on a full pension in 1993 despite widespread knowledge among staff of his conduct.

    Mr Rowe will also be paid for loss of earnings.

    Sheffield city council have been ordered to pay £91,000 in compensation to a former employee who was sexually abused by a council official.

    Richard Rowe, who has waived his right to anonymity, successfully sued the council after being assaulted by Roger Dodds in the early 1980s.

    Dodds was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February for a series of assaults on colleagues and students who came to his office seeking educational grants from the city council.

    Mr Rowe will also be paid for loss of earnings - a figure expected to run to tens of thousands of pounds.

    Three people arrested over the murder of a Leeds woman at the weekend remain in custody - two have been released without charge.

    The men, a 70-year-old and a 32-year-old, have been released without charge after being arrested in connection with the murder of Sinead Wooding.

    The 26-year-old's body was found by joggers in woods near to Alwoodley Crags car park on Sunday.

    Two men, aged 26 and 20, and a 27-year-old woman remain in custody and police are still at the scene.

    The world of cinema is turning back the clock in Scarborough today.

    Three silent films are being screened as part of the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

    All are accompanied by live piano playing.

    Silent movies were made from the late 1880s to the early 1930s, with dialogue transmitted through gestures, mime and title cards.

    Today's films include the 1929 Alfed Hitchcock thriller, Blackmail (pictured above) and Cecil B Demille's Chicago, made in 1927.

    Sheffield boxer Kell Brook's fight with Errol Spence takes place at Bramall Lane in Sheffield a week on Saturday.

    His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has taken to social media to tell fans only a few tickets remain for the event to see the life-long Blade box at the Sheffield United ground.

    North Yorkshire Fire crews have rushed to the aid of a horse called Elvis, who found himself stuck in a bog up to his shoulders, in a boggy field in Jervaulx on the edge of the Dales.

    As you can see, Elvis was rescued using a lot of manpower.

    The number of people out of work and claiming benefit in the Yorkshire and Humber region fell by 3,000 to 134,000 between January and March.

    That means that the unemployment rate in our region stands at 4.9%.

    Nationally, unemployment has fallen again, this time by 53,000 to 1.54 million.

    Research has been released today which looks at whether you can be both fat and fit.

    A study of 3.5 million Britons suggests that having excess fat increases the risk of suffering heart disease by half, even when blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal.
