    Retailer IKEA has announced this morning that it will create a total of 1,300 new jobs in Britain, some of which will come to Sheffield, once their new South Yorkshire site opens.

    Construction on the new store continues next to the Meadowhall Shopping Centre and is set to be finished in the autumn.

    This will see their workforce across Britain and Ireland reach approximately 11,700 employees in total.

    Memorabilia belonging to Jean Alexander, the Honorary Mayoress of Burn near Selby in North Yorkshire, who also happened to be a national television star, goes under the hammer today. 

    Jean, who played Hilda Ogden in Coronation Street, died last year. 

    The character's famous curlers, pinny and headscarf are among the items up for sale.

    Her family's decided memorabilia from her private and stage life should be sold with some of the proceeds going to her favourite charities.

    Hundreds of students in Leeds are being given the chance to question the people fighting to be their next MP. 

    Student unions at Leeds University and Leeds Beckett University are hosting a hustings event tonight, with the candidates for the constituencies where most students live.

    It comes as a campaign in Bradford is urging young people to register, so that they are able to vote next month.

    A Sheffield charity is warning about a scam being run in parts of the city.

    Sheffield MIND, external issued these warning on social media yesterday, after fraudsters collecting money in their name went knocking on doors in Parson Cross.

    The UK's first dementia-friendly garden to be set up in a public park is being opened in Leeds today.

    Four years of planning has gone into the garden at Springhead Park in Rothwell, which includes special seating, raised planting areas, an aviary and designated dementia friendly parking spaces.  

    It's hoped the garden will help sufferers avoid the withdrawal and isolation that can be associated with the symptoms of dementia.

    A pub in Sheffield as been recognised as an 'asset of community value' (ACV).

    It means the The Cherry Tree, on Carter Knowle Avenue, Nether Edge, can't be knocked down or converted without planning permission and, if it's put up for sale, locals have six-months to put together a bid to buy it.

    The retailer Co-op had applied to demolish the pub and build a food store in its place.

    A previous application to list the pub as an ACV was rejected earlier this year, but this time the council said there was suffecient proof the pub was a valuable social hub and there would be 'significant impact' on regulars if it closed.

  8. Yorkshire soldier buried 100 years after being killed at the Sommepublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    More than a century after he died in battle, the remains of a Yorkshire Regiment soldier will be laid to rest in France.

    Private Henry Parker was 23 when he was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, but his bones were only recovered from a farmer's field last year.

    His great nephew matched his DNA after fragments of the soldier’s bones were brought to a government laboratory to be analysed.

    After being told his DNA matched that of the soldier's Francis Storry said, “I am delighted. We will give him a good send off. I feel proud.”  

    Today Private Henry Parker will be buried with full military honours.

    Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday will play for a place in the most valuable game in football tonight. 

    The Yorkshire rivals drew 0-0 in the first leg of their championship play-off semi-final on Sunday.

    Tonight's victor will be one win from the Premier League, a step up estimated to be worth £200m.

    Town will fancy their changes with the fifth-best away form in the division, but the experience of the Wednesday line-up may just be the difference on the night.

    Builders for York's long delayed community stadium will be named by the end of the month.

    It's five years today since the York Community Stadium was granted outline planning permission, but work still hasn't started, even thought the former Huntington stadium and Water World were knocked down to make way for the project.

    The  8,000-capacity stadium, which will be home to York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club, was first proposed in 2009.  

  11. Wakefield club loses licence after Cannabis findpublished at 07:24 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    A nightclub has lost its licence after police found cannabis plants with a street value of £40,000 during a raid.

    Koco Bongo, in Wakefield, was targeted by West Yorkshire Police on 25 March when 42 "well-established" plants were found growing on the top floor.

    Wakefield Council's licensing committee chose to revoke the licence after an application from the force.

    The police also found an amount of cannabis that had been cropped and was drying out in the premises.

    A school in Scarborough, evacuated yesterday and on Monday, following hoax emails and calls, is due to open as normal this morning.

    But students at Graham school need to report to the main hall when they arrive. 

    Police were on site at the school, after what was described as "an incident" was reported yesterday.

    They were called to the same school on Monday, following reports of a suspicious call to the school.

    A 13-year-old was arrested yesterday after the incidents.

  15. Asad Khan death: Boy said he 'felt unsafe in school'published at 06:44 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    An 11-year-old boy told another pupil he felt "unsafe" in his new school on the day he was found hanged, an inquest hearing has been told.

    Asad Khan, from Bradford, died three weeks after starting at Beckfoot Upper Heaton School in the city.

    His mother, Farheen Khan, found her son after forcing her way into his locked bedroom on September 28. He died in hospital a short time later. 

    His family maintain he had been bullied.

    Bradford Coroner's Court heard Asad had told a boy - who cannot be identified - a number of things, including that he felt "unsafe" in school and was "going to skive for a very long time."

    Coroner Martin Fleming heard on another occasion, Asad told the boy: "Life is unfair. I would say it's 90 to 95 per cent life is hard".

    Mr Fleming said he would now consider whether to call the boy in person to give evidence.

    The inquest will resume next month.
