  1. South Yorkshire Police: 'This is what we train for'published at 10:09 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    South Yorkshire Police say with the UK's terror threat being raised to critical, there will be an increased armed policing and security presence across the country.

    They say that there isn't a specific threat to South Yorkshire, but they want to offer reassurance for people going about their day-to-day business.

    There were armed police patrolling Sheffield train station yesterday, with Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts saying there will be an increased police presence over the Bank Holiday weekend.

    South Yorkshire Police say this is what they train for as a policing service, and this is what they're here for as an emergency service.

    Twenty people remain in critical care in hospital and 64 are injured overall, Jon Rouse, chief operating officer for Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership has said.

    Some of those 64 are returning to hospital for treatment, they are not all inpatients, he says.

    The best description I ever heard to do with clouds was that they are "the architecture of the skies."

    That came from Gavin Pretor-Pinney, the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society.

    However, whilst I thoroughly approve of that description, I'm struggling to see what building this cloud might represent.

    Around 200 people turned out to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with those affected by the bombing at the concert in Manchester on Monday night.

    People laid flowers, said prayers, and had a minute's silence in memory of those killed and injured.

    Among them, were three girls who had been at the concert that night.

    They wore their Ariana Grande T-shirts and laid flowers in Sheffield's Peace Gardens.

    There'll be a minute's silence at the Headingley stadium in Leeds before England's one day international against South Africa today.

    The players will also wear black arm bands during the game as a mark of respect following the Manchester attack.

    The Assistant Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Angela Williams, says there will be a "significant policing presence" at the ground.

    Kelly Brewster, 32, has been been named as one of the victims of the Manchester terror attack.

    She was at the Arianda Grande concert on Monday with her sister Claire, and 11-year-old niece when the bomb detonated.

    Kelly, who lived in Sheffield, worked at solicitors Irwin Mitchell.

    Her partner, Ian Winslow, wrote on Facebook saying how she was the happiest she has ever been, and they had so many things planned together.

    Sheffield woman Kelly Brewster has been named as one of the victims of the Manchester terror attack on Monday night.

    Her partner, Ian Winslow, paid tribute to Kelly in a Facebook post, saying she was "the happiest she has ever been".

    Police have released a CCTV picture of a man they want to talk to about a serious sex attack on a woman in Leeds.

    The 18-year-old victim had been in Mission nightclub when the man approached her and a friend.

    She became separated from her friend and the suspect suggested they leave the club.

    They crossed Crown Point Road towards the River Aire and the suspect suggested they walk down the steps behind The Chandlers and along the river. 

    He then grabbed the victim and subjected her to a serious sexual assault. 

    The victim managed to get away and walked back onto Crown Point Road where she flagged down a man riding a bike and police were contacted.

    Detective Constable Emma Kelly, of Leeds District CID, said: "We would like to hear from anyone who recognises the man in the image or who witnessed any part of the incident.

    Several rail routes from Yorkshire to Lancashire will be affected today as emergency services continue to deal with Monday's events at Manchester Arena.

    Manchester Victoria station will remain closed and no trains will operate to or from the station, due to its proximity to the arena, external.
