  7. Sheffield tower block sprinkler plan 'the least our tenants deserve' - Councilpublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

A plan to install sprinklers in all Sheffield's council-owned tower blocks has been planned for a long time, but will now be implemented much quicker, the city council says.

    Sheffield flat

Last night it was announced that all of the council's 24 blocks of flats will be fitted with sprinkler systems "to provide extra reassurance to residents" after the Grenfell Tower blaze in London.

Exterior cladding used on the city's flats is "fireproof and complies with building and planning regulations", the authority added.

But Jayne Dunn, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and community safety, said she had spoken to several tower block residents who were still "scared" following the London fire.

Sprinkler installation was already part of a five-year health and safety plan but that programme would now be accelerated in the light of the Grenfell blaze, she said.

"That reassurance is the least our tenants deserve. We always planned to do this, we just need to move it forward," she said.

    BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

Hello and welcome to BBC Local Live in Yorkshire on Wednesday 21 June 2017.

We'll be with you throughout the day with all the latest news, sport, travel and weather updates.

It's another beautiful morning. The summer weather is creating some dramatic skylines, so I thought I'd start today with this wonderful BBC Weather Watcher pic from Hawes.

    WX

Weather Watcher Brian wrote a nicely detailed description to go with it too.

He says: "Light cloud spreads down from the North to the Yorkshire Dales, as the last of the evening sun lights up the trail of a plane bound for Canada."

Very poetic. I don't know how he knows where the plane is heading, but I'll take his word for it. Perhaps there's an app?
