The Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton has been elected as one of three Deputy Speakers in the House of Commons.
The job involves chairing debates in Parliament when the main Speaker John Bercow is on other business.
The position became vacant because one of the former deputy speakers, Natascha Engle from North East Derbyshire, lost her seat at the general election.

The third day of the day-night County Championship match between Yorkshire and Surrey at Headingley was abandoned without a ball bowled because of rain.
Umpires Richard Kettleborough and Neil Mallender called the day off at 15:30 BST after constant rain on Wednesday.
It means Surrey's hopes of forcing a victory are all but over, having taken control thanks to Kumar Sangakkara's brilliant unbeaten 180 on day two.
Yorkshire are 27-1 in reply to the visitors' 516-7, still 489 runs behind.
A Sheffield man has been fined after he made up claims about being assaulted and robbed.
The 54-year-old called police on 13 June to tell them that he had been robbed on Dyche Road, Jordanthorpe and knocked out.
Later that evening, he told police his house had also been broken into and bank cards stolen.
After officers looked at CCTV footage and invested "considerable resources" into the alleged crimes it became clear they had not happened. He was fined £90.

Climate change scientists from Aberystwyth University and the University of Leeds have become the first to successfully drill through the world's highest glacier.
The group used a drill adapted from a car wash to cut into the Khumbu glacier in the foothills of Everest.
Working at an altitude of roughly 5000m (16,404ft), they spent three days drilling 150m (492ft) into the glacier.
The six-week expedition was a part of the Everdrill project which is collecting data to understand how the glacier moves and changes over time, and how it might respond to anticipated climate change.
The Archer Project hand out clothing and help people living on the streets of Sheffield.
The wet weather is obviously making life for the homless even more difficult.
