  1. Tower block fire safety risk inspections 'pointless' says expertpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    The system to assess fire safety of high-rise buildings in the UK is "pointless" a leading expert claims. Several high-rises across Yorkshire are being tested.

    Fire risk assessments (FRAs) carried out by councils do not consider factors such as external cladding, inspections of which are under way.

    It is feared cladding helped spread a blaze that killed at least 79 people at Grenfell Tower, which was not deemed a high-risk during inspections in 2016.

    Professor Arnold Dix said the FRA system was simply a "box-ticking exercise".

    A Rotherham man has been ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work in the community after being found guilty of fly-tipping.

    Ian Hague, then of Doncaster Road, Dalton, was given a community order for dumping approximately 20 bags of household waste.

    In addition to the community order, he was ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £85.

    A city council is looking to recruit a new hornblower to help maintain a centuries-old ceremony.

    A horn has been sounded four times in Ripon's Market Place every night at 21:00 since AD886 to "set the watch".

    Ripon City Council is advertising for a new member of the Hornblowing Team to work up to three nights a week.

    The job description states, external the main responsibilities are "to sound the horn at 9pm... provide a brief history of the horn blowing ceremony for the public in attendance... and sound the horn three times outside the mayor's house".

    In exchange for their services the hornblower is paid £8.72 an hour and £21.12 for attendance at civic events.

  7. Football Association 'notes' CPS decision to press charges over Hillsboroughpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    A Football Association spokesperson said it "notes the decision taken by the CPS" and that it "co-operated fully with the investigation, as we did with the inquests heard by Lord Justice Goldring".

    The inquests concluded in April 2016 that 96 football fans had been unlawfully killed as a result of a fatal crush at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission, which continues to investigate the conduct of officers in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, has reacted to the Crown Prosecution Service's announcement that six people face criminal charges.

    Deputy chairman Rachel Cerfontyne said: "The CPS has announced charging decisions on six of the eight suspects formally referred by the IPCC in January this year. We have also referred a further two individuals.

    "We will be working closely with the CPS on the prosecution case and will provide any further assistance necessary while decisions on the remaining IPCC files are under consideration.

    "Following criminal proceedings, we will consider whether any former police officers, including all of those referred to the CPS for a charging decision, would have had cases to answer for misconduct if they were still serving.

    "The evidence supporting these findings will be set out in the final investigation report."

    A date has been announced for the start of demolition at Headingley stadium to allow a major revamp of the rugby and cricket facilities.

    Rugby league club Leeds Rhinos have confirmed the South Stand, first opened in 1931, is to be demolished at the end of August.

    The sporting complex hosts cricket, rugby league and rugby union fixtures.

    The final rugby league game with the stand in situ is to be on 18 August, the club said.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission says additional investigative work is needed into the conduct of West Midlands Police in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster.

    West Midlands Police was brought in to carry out the original investigation into the conduct of South Yorkshire Police officers.

    Sue Hemming, the Crown Prosecution Service's Head of Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said the files are subject to "ongoing consideration" by the CPS and a decision will be announced in due course as to whether any charges will be brought.

    The IPCC added decisions on two West Midlands Police suspects that had been referred to the CPS in January, remain under consideration.

    A group representing businesses along the A64 has welcomed news the road could be turned into a dual carriageway between York and Malton by 2023, but say the plans must now be delivered.

    Highways England says its preferred option is to upgrade the stretch of road, which could mean scrapping plans to build a flyover at the Hopgrove roundabout in York.

    The Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton, Kevin Hollinrake, says he's confident it will be turned into a dual carriageway within six-years.
