    British Transport Police have said they're concerned after seeing someone 'train surfing' a commuter train a couple of weeks ago.

    The policing team, that work from Sheffield train station, say the train was stopped when the man was spotted holding onto the back.

    It's just been announced that the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon will return to Leeds next year.

    It's seen as the pinnacle of international triathlon competition, and brings elite Olympic-level athletes to the city who are also competing around the globe to become world champion.

    This year was the second it was held in the city, with the athletes racing along a course from Roundhay Park down to Leeds city centre.

    Thousands of spectators came to the city to see it.

    It's due to reopen to the public on 1 August, but what's the big deal about it?

    Here are five things you didn't know about the Piece Hall:

    • It was built in 1779 to to support the trading of "pieces" of cloth
    • The Piece Hall is a survivor of the great 18th century northern cloth halls
    • Back in 1779 you could go there and buy a 30 yard length of woven woollen fabric, but not much else
    • It's regarded as one of Britain’s most outstanding Georgian buildings
    • On the day of its opening a fireworks display was set off - by a pigeon

    A woman from Leeds who featured in a TV advert saying she would holiday "anywhere but Skegness" has been offered a tour of the resort by the town's mayor.

    In the advert for Lotto, a number of people suggest destinations where they would take their families if they won a large sum of money.

    Gina Parkin appears at the end and says "anywhere but Skegness".

    She has now apologised for the off-the-cuff comment, saying she "hadn't meant to upset anybody".

    A biker is in hospital in a stable condition after a crash nine miles west of Skipton left him with serious injuries.

    It happened near Hellifield yesterday lunchtime on the A682 at the junction with the B6253.

    A blue Peugeot 107, driven by a 74-year-old woman, was travelling from Gisburn and was involved in the crash with the 45-year-old man who was riding a a black and silver Honda motorcycle.

    The man, who is from the Blackburn area, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary. The woman, who was from Leicestershire had minor injuries.

  7. Date set for work to begin on York's Community Stadiumpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    It's been announced that work on York's new community stadium should begin in the Autumn.

    The sports venue will be home to York City Football Club and York City Knights.

    The project has been delayed for years and the cost has risen to £34m.

    Councillor Nigel Ayre is in charge of Leisure and Tourism at the city council.

    Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says the club will use the money earned from sell-on fees to buy new players.

    Kyle Walker's £45m move to Manchester City and Harry Maguire's £17m transfer to Leicester have benefited the Blades.

    The sell-on fees for the ex-players, who left in 2009 and 2014 respectively, will now be reinvested in the squad.

    "We've done fantastically well in terms of protecting ourselves with the likes of Jamie Murphy, Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire," Wilder said.

    He was last seen by his family at around 22:40 last Saturday outside the Revelstoke Hotel in Bridlington.

    Police say they are concerned about him and that he has links in the Blackpool and Bridlington areas.

    An eighty-two-year old man from Acomb, York, told BBC Radio York how a friendship telephone scheme has given him companionship.

    Joseph has been calling The Silver Line, external for three years, following the death of his wife. He says that during difficult times it's been a lifeline:

    The charity operates a confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK. It's open 24/7.

    Cladding on Sheffield Children's Hospital is in the final stages of being removed today.

    Work started on removing the cladding on the Stephenson Wing on 10 July after samples of it were sent for fire safety testing.

    Patients don't use the area where the cladding was fitted, which is a five-storey building.

    The top two floors are vacant.

    Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust says: "We can assure families that the hospital remains a safe place to visit."

    The Workhouse Museum in Ripon is opening up more of the original site for visitors.

    The purchase of the main block of the workhouse was supported by a £402,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    An additional £28,000 was needed to complete the project.

    Visitors will now be able to visit the main block of the workhouse, which housed the master's house, the dormitory wings, the kitchen and dining room.

    By opening up more space and rooms they have doubled the size of the museum.

  13. City centre roads closed for cycle racepublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    City centre roads will be closed this afternoon as some of the country's top cyclists will be in Sheffield.

    It's for the British National Circuit Race Championships, with many city centre roads closed to make the course safe for the cyclists and spectators.

    Racing starts at 18:30, with some road and pedestrian area closures being in place from midday.

    They'll compete for the prestigious red, white and blue national champions' jerseys.

    The race begins and ends on Pinstone Street. Both the men's and women's titles will be decided.

    If you're looking for an excuse to run the Yorkshire Marathon in October, why not help a York-based hospice out - They're looking for runners for the event.

    St Leonard’s Hospice say anyone able to "run, jog, walk or crawl" around the course could join their team for the event.

    Sarah Atkinson, Community Fundraiser at St Leonard’s Hospice, said "You’ll be cheered on every step of the way by us and our fantastic supporters, be given refreshments and a well-deserved massage at the end! "

    The care at St Leonard’s Hospice is provided free of charge, but is not free to provide.

    The hospice relies on the generosity of the public and fundraising by the local community to help raise the £4.85 million it costs each year to run.

    The game has been moved and will now be shown on TV, with a 12:30 kick off.

  16. Sheffield Labour MP challenged on attitude to womenpublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    A woman from Sheffield has challenged Jared O' Mara, the newly elected Labour MP for Sheffield Hallam, about his attitude and behaviour towards women.

    It's after she posted her account of an encounter she says she had with him two months before he was elected in June's General Election.

    Liz Asden says she met Mr O' Mara at West Street Live, the venue in Sheffield which he worked before his election and his manner was "aggressive, sexist and contemptuous."

    She says he stood by whilst his bouncers hit her in the face and man-handled her out of his club.

    He emphatically denies the allegations and says he knows nothing about the events Liz Asden describes.

    Mr O'Mara added there was "nothing on record in terms of charges with the police or anything like that.”

  17. Grenfell cladding '14 times combustibility limit' - University of Leeds researchpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    Research by scientists at the University of Leeds suggests that burning cladding on Grenfell Tower would have released 14 times more heat than a key government test allows.

    Energy emitted from the cladding and insulation would have been equivalent to burning 51 tonnes of pinewood.

    The cladding's plastic core would have burned "as quickly as petrol", it said.

    The contractors who fitted the cladding and insulation said they both passed all regulations.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended a number of fires last night, which they believe were started deliberately.

    All the incidents happened yesterday evening within a few of hours of each other.

    The earliest of the fires was in Harrogate and involved three bales and approximately 1,500 square metres of stubble.

    Another fire was extinguished around an hour later at the railway embankment in South Milford, near Selby.

    Firefighters also dealt with about 10 tyres that were on fire in a derelict barn in Ouse Bank in Selby.
