Sheffield City Council announced nearly £800,000 to kickstart a revamp of the city's Castlegate Quarter, including a fresh dig on the castle site.

The money will also go towards a new green "corridor", the transformation of empty shops and to help protect the city's Old Town Hall.

Castlegate is the oldest part of Sheffield. It's had a castle, bridge, market and houses on the site since at least the Norman Conquest.

The council says the money, £786,000 from its capital growth fund, will be used to recreate the area as a digital business hub, while also celebrating its history.

  2. A devolution deal for Yorkshire?published at 06:45 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

Seventeen councils in Yorkshire have said they want to unite for a devolution deal.

    Yorkshire devolution

If agreed, the region would be given control of budgets for transport and education.

However, councils including Sheffield and Rotherham, haven't signed up to the idea.

That's because they want to stick with the Sheffield City Region deal that's already on the table - £30m a year for the next 30 years with powers over transport, infrastructure and skills.

The government hasn't said whether a devolution deal is possible.

  3. A brief history of Yorkshire Daypublished at 06:38 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Today is Yorkshire Day.

Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK, with a population of over five million people; that's almost twice the size of Wales!

    Brimham Rocks

The Dales, Moors and Pennines; the Brontes; Castle Howard, Brimham Rocks, Whitby Abbey, York Minster.

These are just a few examples of well-known local landmarks, which attract thousands of visitors to the area every year.

    Castle Howard

The idea of Yorkshire Day came about during a meeting of the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1974.

It was first celebrated on 1 August 1975 in Beverley, as a protest movement against the local government re-organisation, when some communities were separated from the county.

It is also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, had campaigned.

Yorkshire Day celebrates everything Yorkshire. Every year, on this day, members of the society read a declaration of the integrity of Yorkshire at each of the four Bars of York; the gates into the old walled city.
