  1. Harrogate nurse struck off after giving dishonest evidence at inquestpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

A "skilled and experienced" nurse, who gave dishonest evidence at an inquest into the death of a patient who'd gone missing from a Harrogate hospital, has been banned from the profession.

It follows the death in 2012 of retired police officer, Graham Roskell, who was undergoing treatment for a brain condition which left him confused and disorientated.

Andrew Hunter, who was one of the nurses responsible for Graham's care, claimed he was not present when the patients wife said she was concerned her husband might escape, after he'd pulled out a drip, and was not aware there was a risk of him absconding.

The panel also heard that, the day before Mr Roskell's disappearance, another member of staff recommended he should receive one-to-one care, but Mr Hunter claimed he didn't hear that because of building works.

Announcing a decision to strike him off, the panel told Mr Hunter he'd "failed to demonstrate the integrity the public expects of a registered nurse."

  6. West Yorkshire supermarket chain profits collapsepublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

The Leeds-based supermarket chain Asda has revealed a poor 2016, in which sales and profits collapsed, as the firm came out worse for wear in Britain's supermarket wars.

Asda has a head office on the Southbank in Leeds (pictured).

The company saw sales drop 3.2% to £21.7bn, while pre-tax profits crashed almost 19% to £791.7m.

The figures emphasise what's been a difficult time for the grocery giant, which has reported 11 consecutive quarters of sales declines.

"Our sales performance, relative to the market, was behind our expectations," the company said.

However, Asda added that despite the disappointing results, there are signs that turnaround efforts under new boss Sean Clarke are beginning to bear fruit.

  7. Promise of £10bn for rail projects in the Northpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

Labour's promising it would put £10bn into new rail projects in the North, if it was in government.

Shadow Transport Secretary, Andy McDonald, is in West Yorkshire today talking to local rail users, following the scrapping of a number of electrification schemes by the government.

The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says bi-mode trains, which run on electric or diesel, are the answer rather than full electrification.

It's led to doubts about the future of the trans-Pennine route, which the government previously hinted would be electrified by the year 2022.

Mr McDonald, who's visiting Morley, says electric trains are up to a third less polluting than diesel units and says the Conservatives have been promising the electrification of the Great Western Mainline from Paddington to Swansea "since 2012"

He added last week's announcement confirms they have been, "taking people for a ride."

  9. Further appeal for information on red kite shootingpublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

Police investigating the death of a red kite in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, have issued a further appeal for information, after interviewing a man in connection with the incident.

On 11 March a dead red kite was found and an examination revealed the carcass contained what is believed to be lead shot.

Three rewards worth a total of £3,000 have been offered for information leading to the arrest and charge of anyone involved in the killing.

In addition, Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to £1,000 for information that enables police to arrest and charge those responsible.

Last month officers interviewed a man from the Nidderdale area as a voluntary attendee in connection with the incident.

PC David Mackay, a Wildlife Crime Officer on North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Taskforce, said: “I am urging anyone who has not yet come forward to do so now. This lengthy investigation shows that we take bird of prey persecution extremely seriously.”

  10. 'A massive worry': Care crisis predictedpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

An estimated 70,000 elderly people will go without care home beds over the next decade.

That's according to new research from BBC Radio 4's 'You and Yours' programme, which suggests that current care just can't keep up with demand.

Sue O'Shea has a cousin in a West Yorkshire care home which is set to close.

She says the figures don't surprise her:

  15. Hen harriers return to the Yorkshire Dales National Parkpublished at 07:09 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

One of England’s rarest breeding birds, the hen harrier, attempted to nest in the Yorkshire Dales National Park this spring for the first time in 10 years.

There are just four breeding pairs left in England and numbers are declining elsewhere in the UK.

The National Park has large areas of potentially suitable nesting habitat for the birds of prey, but several factors, including persecution, have precluded breeding.

Several hen harriers, however, lingered in the park this spring and started to display.

One male paired up with two separate females: an adult female and an immature female.

Both females laid eggs in nests sited on the edge of a moor managed for grouse shooting, but neither nesting attempt was successful.

The YDNPA’s Chief Executive, David Butterworth, said: “Given it had been ten years since hen harriers nested in the National Park, the presence of these birds was extremely welcome.

"It was incredibly disappointing the nesting attempts failed, despite the best efforts of all involved."

Mark Arries, 26, from Blyth, and Edward Ide, 21, from Amble, died on the boat in Whitby harbour in January 2014.

Timothy Bowman-Davies, 44, from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, has admitted failing to ensure the boat was operated safely.

A trial of issue before a judge is being held at Leeds Crown Court to decide if he knew the crew were using the cooker as a heating source.

  20. Warnings after drug kills 'at least 60'published at 06:37 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

At least 60 people have died in the UK in the last eight months after taking the strong painkiller fentanyl.

    SpikeImage source, Science photo library

Tests on heroin seized by police since November found traces of the synthetic drug, with more than 70 further deaths pending toxicology reports, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

Some contained carfentanyl, which is 10,000 times stronger as morphine and is often used to tranquilize elephants.

Health officials and police have warned heroin users to be "extra careful".

Most of the deaths were in the police force areas of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Humberside and Cleveland, the NCA said.

They were predominantly men and a range of ages, with none younger than 18.
