    An overturned tanker has closed the M1 southbound at J47 this afternoon.

    Police say the driver has now been taken out of the cab and is on his way to hospital by ambulance.

    Highways England have just issued a diversion route, external because the road is still shut as they try to recover the tanker.

    There are now eight miles of queues southbound on the A1(M) as police divert traffic around the scene of the crash.

    Highways England now say they don't expect the tanker to be moved until 19:00 tonight.

    Injured Doncaster soldier Ben Parkinson is set to get a "full care assessment" after a row about paying for his care.

    Lawyers for Ben, a paratrooper who was injured while serving in Afghanistan in 2006, say he is waiting for new wheelchairs, gym equipment to be repaired and for funding for respite carers.

    The legal firm says NHS England will take over Ben's personal health budget from Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group after a "full care assessment", adding It will then have a meeting with the Ministry of Defence in a bid to resolve the claims of issues relating to Ben's care.

  4. Major new Leeds city centre development in the spotlightpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    Plans for a major revamp of part of Leeds city centre are being discussed by official today.

    Developers want to increase the number of flats being built next to the West Yorkshire Playhouse - where Leeds City College is also building a new campus.

    The latest plans would see the number of homes being built increased from 428 to more than 500. Offices, restaurants and cafes will will also be built.

    A multi-storey car park was going to be built here - but the developers now want to delay those plans, because of the new Victoria Gate car park across the road.

    Traffic heading in both directions on the M1 is very slow this afternoon after a tanker overturned around J47.

    Highways England say they don't expect the road to reopen until about 16:00.

    Emergency services are still at the scene trying to free the driver of the tanker from his cab.

    More details are emerging about the overturned tanker on the M1 near J47 Garforth this lunchtime:

    Police say that it appears the tanker veered across the carriageway and crossed the central reservation just after 11:00.

    The driver has serious injuries but is conscious and breathing as emergency services work to free him - officers say that the tanker is believed to be empty.

    The motorway is closed in both directions east of Leeds with over six miles of queues southbound and just over three northbound.

    Rotherham's MP says it is "morally repugnant" to pay paedophiles to act as informants.

    However, Sarah Champion, who is also Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, said using paedophiles as informants, unpaid, is worthwhile if it prevents abuse.

  14. On your bike: Leeds MP 'egged-on' in charity ride to Germanypublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    A West Yorkshire Labour MP is cycling from Yorkshire to Germany to raise money for children in two Kenyan villages.

    On his journey, Fabian Hamilton, who represents Leeds North East, will pedal a total of about 250 miles as he travels from Millennium Square in Leeds via Hull and Zeebrugge to Aachen in Germany.

    He's hoping to complete the ride in four days to support the Funzi and Bodo Trust, which wants to build a chicken farm so children can have fresh eggs.

    His road trip through Belgium, Holland and Germany, will support a free-range chicken farm for 2,500 birds.

    The eggs they lay will ensure local schoolchildren will have boiled eggs in school.

    The farm will also teach them and their parents agricultural skills and the remaining eggs will be sold to buy medicines for the charity's two medical clinics.

    A six-year-old boy has been bitten by a dog in Graves Park, Sheffield.

    Police are looking for the man pictured below, who officers believe might have seen what happened:

    The boy was left with injuries under his eye after the beige cocker spaniel bit him at about 12:30 on 24 July.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.

  16. Travel update: All lanes reopen on M62published at 12:45 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    All lanes have reopened on the M62 after an earlier incident at J19 just outside the Greater Manchester area.

    But queues are still stretching as far back as J22 in West Yorkshire - just after the little house on the prairie, or whatever you might call the farm in the middle of the motorway:

    Police are asking for help to find a missing 16-year-old girl from Doncaster.

    Elle Smith was last seen at about 01:30 in the Woodlea Grove area of Armthorpe.

    She was wearing a grey off-the-shoulder jumper, black jeans and black slip-on shoes.

    The owners of a Bradford warehouse badly damaged in a fire last night have thanked firefighters for their quick response to the blaze.

    At its height, up to 85 firefighters dealt with the blaze at Gordon Rhodes and Son at the Eurocam Technology Park on Chase Way.

    The firm's senior director, Ian Rhodes,said: "We would like to thank West Yorkshire Fire Brigade for their quick response and courageous help and support.

    "A business contingency plan is currently being put in place that will allow us to continue to trade. Thankfully there were no members of staff in the building at the time of the fire," he added.
