    Several cycling groups across the county have complained to South Yorkshire Police about dangerous overtaking.

    The force has now agreed to set up a "safe pass" initiative.

    It'll see see officers riding bikes in Sheffield and Doncaster wearing cameras to record offenders who overtake dangerously and give less than a 1.5m clearance.

    Scientists in York have identified a new breed of bat.

    It was found in a remote rainforest in Papua New Guinea and was nicknamed Yoda due to its resemblance to the Star Wars Jedi Master.

    But now, biologists at the University of York have given it the official name of "the happy tube-nosed fruit bat" since its round jaw gives the impression it's constantly smiling.

    Naturalists at the university examined literature and 3,000 specimens in 18 museums around the world before they could formally distinguish and register Happy as a new species.

    A Huddersfield man has been charged in connection with a fatal house fire in the town last year in which two boys died.

    Three-year-old Logan Taylor and his brother Jake Casey, aged two, died in the fire on Alder Street, Fartown, on Saturday 20 February 2016.

    The 50-year-old man, from Birkby, is due to appear before Kirklees Magistrates' Court on Friday 18 August charged with two counts of gross negligence manslaughter.

    This map apparently highlights the zones which would be wiped out by a nuclear strike on one of 20 major cities - and where you'd be safe.

    Rain will continue through the afternoon, but with some drier and perhaps brighter intervals in the east.

    Remaining rather cloudy through the evening with further outbreaks of rain, the heaviest over western hills.

    This will gradually ease overnight with clear spells continuing in the east.

  7. Talks to avert Doncaster bin strikepublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    Talks are due to be held today between the Unite union and the company which empties bins in Doncaster in a bid to try to avert a walkout planned for 23 August.

    Unite members are in dispute with Suez over pay and jobs.

    It's already led to industrial action in Birmingham, with rubbish left uncollected there.

    The union said Suez made a 2% pay offer, conditional on the removal of guaranteed overtime. It said this would mean most workers not receiving an increase.

    The company is also planning job cuts, Unite claims.

    At the time of the strike announcement, Nick Browning, of Suez recycling and recovery UK, said Unite members on the Doncaster contract received a significant pay award last December, and the union's current demands were "unrealistic".

    The pay award was "not conditional on employees sacrificing overtime payments", he added.

  8. Calls for bypass around A64 villagepublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    There are renewed calls to improve safety on a road where a couple from Leeds died on their wedding day.

    In just over a year, the A64 between York and Scarborough is said to have claimed 11 lives, including those of Paul and Susan Dockerty.

    The couple had just got married and were travelling in a car with Derek and Joy Green, who were guests at the wedding in July last year when a head-on crash with a lorry on the A64 at Scampston Bridge, between Malton and Scarborough, killed all four.

    Now, campaigners are calling for a bypass around the village of Rillington (pictured), near Malton.

    Highways England says there are currently no major plans to build one.

  10. Asda and Morrisons ditch egg products amid Europe contamination scandalpublished at 06:40

    Four supermarkets, including Bradford-based Morrisons and Leeds-based Asda, have taken products off their shelves in the wake of the egg contamination scare.

    The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said yesterday that the scale of the problem was higher than previously thought, with about 700,000 eggs having been sent to the UK from potentially contaminated Dutch farms - up from an early estimate of 21,000.

    In response, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have withdrawn a total of 11 products - including sandwiches, sandwich fillers and salads - from sale.

    The FSA said investigations suggested it was "very unlikely" that the eggs posed a risk to public health as it released a list of processed products withdrawn in the UK "to ensure that consumers are protected".
