A breast cancer charity which had shops in Yorkshire and the Humber region is being investigated after its founder paid herself £31,000 in breach of charity law.

    Wendy Watson

Wendy Watson MBE, who launched National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline in 1996, has resigned as a trustee.

Mrs Watson, from Derbyshire, founded the charity four years after she became the first woman in the UK to have a pre-emptive mastectomy.

By 2012, it was raising almost £1m per year from charity shops in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, the Humber region and London.

Rural crime has been estimated to cost the UK £39m, with many farmers feeling "under siege" from thieves, a new report shows.

Transport links also mean thieves can steal machinery and move it into mainland Europe in "a matter of hours", according to insurer NFU Mutual's Rural Crime Report

Although the cost has reduced from £41m in 2015, the NFU report says farmyards are becoming "fortresses".

The survey shows the problem costs more than £1m a year in both West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

Roger, a North Yorkshire farmer, was recently hit by thieves and he says the problem is even bigger than is being reported:

Ann Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death by Will Cornick at Corpus Christi Catholic College, Leeds, in April 2014.

Cornick, who was 15 at the time, was given a life sentence in 2014 after admitting murdering Mrs Maguire, who had taught Spanish at Corpus Christi for more than 40 years.

Her husband and her children have challenged a decision not to call students who saw the attack to court.
