    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have rescued a man from a fire in his flat in Wombwell.

    Three crews from Dearne, Cudworth and Barnsley stations were called to a fire in a second floor flat on Haverhill Grove at around 19:30 last night.

    Crews using breathing apparatus went into the flat and found the man in a bedroom overcome by smoke.

    He was treated by ambulance crews and then taken to hospital.

    Spanish police say they've shot dead five people in the town of Cambrils, as they tried to stop a second terrorist attack overnight.

    Seven people were hurt when a car was driven into them in the popular seaside resort, to the south-west of Barcelona.

    Police say the attackers were wearing explosive belts.

    It came just hours after the attack in Barcelona city centre, when a van was driven into crowds on Las Ramblas, a very busy street, popular with tourists.

    South Yorkshire Police investigating several armed robberies at supermarkets in Sheffield have released CCTV images of the man they want to interview.

    The first and second raids both happened at Sainsbury's on Mortimer Street in the city centre during July and August, with the third robbery taking place at the Co-op on Gleadless Road last weekend.

    The fourth attack was on Wednesday evening at the Tesco Express in Sharrow.

    Campaigners opposing plans for an asphalt plant at Hessay near York say they'll continue to fight on as a decision on the scheme has been delayed.

    Last night councillors were due to decide whether to give it the go-ahead. But they've put off the decision until next month.

    Hundreds of people have objected to plans for the site, worried about pollution, increased traffic and potential impact on greenbelt land.

    The company behind the plant says it has worked with the council to address these issues.

    Now planners say they need to look again at the application.

    Spanish police say they have killed five terror suspects in the seaside resort of Cambrils, stopping what the authorities believed was to be a second attack linked to the one in Barcelona hours earlier.

    Reports say 13 people died and dozens were injured when a van was driven into crowds in Barcelona's Las Ramblas area yesterday afternoon.

    A broken down train at Durham is causing delays of up to 30 minutes on Virgin Trains East Coast.

    There's quite a few delays posted as a result.

    The 07:37 York to London is currently running 46 minutes late.

    Other trains from York to London are posted as delayed.

    Trains at Doncaster are also affected. The 07:56 train to Reading was due to leave at 08:19.

    Two people have been taken to hospital for treatment after a fire at a house in York.

    The fire broke out in the bedroom of the semi-detached house on Tostig Avenue in Acomb at 18:30.

    The cause of the fire is being investigated.

    The family of a 16-year-old boy stabbed to death in Leeds say they don't feel their neighbourhood is safe.

    A 17-year-old boy's been found guilty of the manslaughter of Irfan Wahid, who died in a fight over a girl.

    The attack happened in Harehills, where some people have told BBC Radio Leeds they're worried about the level of crime.

    A two-day dispersal order came into force on an estate in York yesterday evening.

    Police say groups of up to 30 youths have been involved in over 25 incidents of anti-social behaviour in Chapelfields over the last nine days.

    Police say the level of behaviour is "just astonishing", and elderly residents are scared in their own homes.

  11. Gun and hammer pair raid Sheffield travel agentpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 18 August 2017

    Armed robbers carrying a sawn-off shotgun and a sledgehammer have attacked a travel agents in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield.

    The attack happened at about 17:30 at Thomson travel agents on Middlewood Road.

    A Volkswagen Polo that had been stolen pulled up outside and a man got out of the passenger side of the car with a sledgehammer.

    He then smashed the glass door and reached through to unlock it and entered the store.

    The driver of the car also raided the store wielding a sawn-off shotgun.

    They both threatened staff and demanded cash from the safe.

    Police say the thieves got away with a "substantial amount of cash".

    The two strikes are set to start on 23 August and 2 September.
