  1. Listen: 'All of us will suffer' - Tadcaster mayor on parking charges planpublished at 09:45

The mayor of Tadcaster says the town council is totally against plans to introduce parking charges in the town.

Margaret Middlemass says plans to charge for parking in two town centre car parks are "another blow for the town" which she says is still recovering from the 2015 floods.

Many residents of Tadcaster don't have parking spaces outside their homes, so at the moment they park for free in the town's Chapel Street and Britannia car parks.

But if Selby District Council's plans to introduce charges go ahead they could have to pay almost £1,000 a year to park, which the Mayor says is unacceptable:

  2. The landmarks that mean you're nearly homepublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

They're the sights that mean the journey's end is near and the comforts of home await...

From towers to trees and works of art, BBC News has taken a trip around some of your favourite roadside landmarks that loom large above the landscape - and West Yorkshire's Emley Moor transmitter is among the chosen sites.

The Arqiva Tower transmitter is 1,083ft high and is a Grade II-listed structure which is taller than The Shard in London.

Its television coverage area is one of the largest in the UK, serving most of Yorkshire including Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York.

Emily Wells tells the BBC: "I've lived in Flockton all my life so see it every day from my window. Driving past, I never tire of slowing down and looking up.

And Jill Kynaston says: "My mum used to cry when she saw the mast after fab holidays because we were nearly home and the holiday was definitely over." Read more here.

  3. Spit guards to be carried by West Yorkshire Police from todaypublished at 09:20

West Yorkshire Police officers start carrying spit guards from today.

    Spit guard

The mesh fabric hoods are placed over the heads of suspects to prevent spitting or biting.

They can only be used once and are usually used in custody suites or when moving people in custody from one location to another.

Critics say spit hoods are distressing and humiliating, can cause panic in the detained person, and make it harder to notice if a prisoner is having difficulty breathing.

  6. Watch: Argentinian family's 17-year world tour reaches Yorkshirepublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

A family who've been on a round-the-world road trip for 17 years have arrived in York on the next stop of their global tour.

The Zapps are from Argentina and have visited a total of 80 countries before reaching Yorkshire.

There's dad Herman, mum Candelaria, and four children who've all been born in different countries as they've toured the globe.

Herman and Candelaria originally planned to just go on a journey for just six months, but 17 years later it's clear that plan was soon thrown out of the car window as the travel bug well and truly bit.

"We were always dreaming of travelling," says Herman - and that, it seems, is exactly what they're doing:

  7. 'No reason why HS3 can't happen' - Osborne on high-speed northern rail linkpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

More on the news that the former Chancellor George Osborne is calling on the government to build high-speed rail lines in the north of England from Liverpool to Hull.

Writing in the FT, Mr Osborne says the new railway would "bring seven million extra people - and three times the number of businesses - within a 90-minute journey time of one of the northern cities".

He said the estimated cost of the Pennines line had been put as high as £7bn, but argued the investment could be spread over many years and the transport budget was built to take in such large projects.

"There is no geographical reason why this cannot happen," wrote Mr Osborne.

"The distance between Manchester and Leeds is shorter than the length of the Central line on the London Underground."

Last year, the prime minister vowed to press ahead with the project.

L/Cpl William "Ginger" Loney, from Dewsbury has been in an unmarked grave for almost 73 years.

But he has finally been identified by Dutch historians and will get his own gravestone in a ceremony in September.

It is hoped a new appeal for living relatives could allow any to attend after an initial search was in vain.

L/Cpl Loney enlisted in the Royal Artillery but volunteered for the airborne forces.

He served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before he jumped into Arnhem, Netherlands, on 17 September 1944.

The 26-year-old was killed the same day by machine gun fire as he entered the town.

  9. Listen: Crackdown on poor quality housing in Barnsleypublished at 07:53 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

Tough new measures to crack down on poor housing and anti-social behaviour in parts of Barnsley could be introduced by the local authority.

If given the go-ahead, the scheme would operate on specific roads in Elsecar, Wombwell, Goldthorpe and Measborough Dyke and would target landlords who let properties in the private rented sector.

Under Barnsley Council's plans, landlords would have to buy a five-year licence costing £530 and agree to have their properties inspected by council teams.

David and his wife live next to one of the areas where the scheme is being introduced and he says the affected streets all too often become mini-rubbish dumps:

  10. Listen: 'The town will suffer' - Fears over Tadcaster parking charge planpublished at 07:40 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

People living in a North Yorkshire town could have to pay almost £1,000 a year to park near their homes if proposals to introduce charges there get the go-ahead.

Many residents of Tadcaster don't have parking spaces outside their homes, so at the moment they park for free in the town's Chapel Street and Britannia car parks.

But Selby District Council says it now wants to charge £1 for three hours' parking and £3 for all day parking in the town - a plan which some local residents and businesses aren't happy about.

David Bewley, who lives and works in the town, says introducing the charges would hit local residents and businesses hard:

Mr Osborne, who spearheaded the "Northern Powerhouse" initiative when in government, asked for the commitment in an article in the Financial Times, external.

He admitted "it will not be cheap", but said it would "transform" the economy.

The government said it was "investing billions of pounds" to "better connect communities" across the north.

The Northern Powerhouse Partnership - chaired by the former Tatton MP - is launching a campaign for the new-high speed connection this week, starting with a line across the Pennines.

This plan for "HS3" would follow on from the existing HS2 scheme - a planned line linking London and Birmingham, that will split into two branches to Manchester and Leeds.
