On their travels, the drivers plan to give away free gin and tonics at a series of pop-up bars in aid of charities, with the hope of reaching the furthest point of the EU, Greece, by 24 September.

Along the 2,500-mile long trip, the group will meet members of local Rotary clubs to help them with their pop-up bars.

David Smith, a member of the Rotary Club of Leeds. is one of eight friends driving the four black cabs which between them have already clocked-up more than a million miles.

He says: "It's nothing to do with politics at all. You can travel round Europe nice and easy - no visas - at the moment, so now seems to be the time to do it."

To accommodate their every need, they've attached a barbecue to the boot of one of the cabs (pictured) - let's just hope they don't keep the meter running!

No legal or disciplinary proceedings should be brought against any current or former senior officers at Rotherham Council over its handling of child sexual exploitation, one report published this afternoon has said.

In a statement, Labour Rotherham MP Sarah Champion said she had hoped the publication of the reports would "draw a line under the catalogue of errors which led to our children being let down so badly by those supposed to protect them".

She adds: "How is Rotherham meant to have confidence that this will never happen again unless we know exactly what went wrong?

"This feels like a completely wasted opportunity to allow the town to move forward."

Six new reports have been published looking at various aspects of the scandal and were commissioned by the council in the wake of the Jay Report, which showed how at least 1,400 children were raped, trafficked and sexually abused in the town between 1997 and 2013.

Rotherham council leader Chris Reed says: "Today marks another step in our journey, but nothing alters the fact that so many children were let down and that so many abusers have walked free in our town for too long.

"As a councillor, as a member of the Labour Party and as a citizen of Rotherham I’m still deeply sorry for what went wrong.

"We can't change the past - and God knows I wish we could - but I hope these reports help to give some solace and help to prevent further suffering in the future," adds Councillor Reed.

  20. Rotherham abuse: 'Collective failure' in town taxi licensingpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

There was a "collective failure" in taxi licensing in Rotherham, leading to "one failure compounding another", a public meeting into the publication of several reports into how child sexual abuse was handled by Rotherham Council has heard.

    John RiddellImage source, Rotherham Council

Previously, the Jay report said 1,400 children had been abused in the town, with taxi drivers playing a "prominent role".

John Riddell has told the Rotherham Council meeting effective action to stop child sexual exploitation was never taken because taxi enforcement action was split from licensing and further split into three regions.

Mr Riddell added that he had "no doubt the difficulties have been confronted" with a repetition "highly unlikely".
