    The University of Huddersfield has fended of competition from around the world to become the first winner of the Global Teaching Excellence award.

    It beat 26 other finalists from countries including Australia, Switzerland, Canada, South Africa and The Netherlands.

    This recent accolade follows the university's achievement of Gold-ranked status in the government-backed Teaching Excellence Award.

    Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan was full of praise for the university's recent success.

  4. Calder Valley rail services suspendedpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    Northern train services are currently suspended on the Halifax-Bradford Interchange-Leeds route due to a lineside fire just outside Bradford Interchange.

    Northern advises commuters using the Calder Valey route that:

    • Services between Halifax and Leeds will be diverted via Brighouse/Elland
    • Customers wanting travel from Bradford to Leeds should go to Bradford Foster Square
    • Replacement buses are being put in place for services on the Halifax, Low Moor, Bradford Interchange, New Pudsey, Bramley, Leeds route

    They've been created by North Yorkshire sculptor Emma Stothard and this weekend you'll get the chance to see them as part of Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage.

    Emma, who's based in Whitby, created Tara and her two calves in woven willow.

    The 2m-high mother and two babies were first seen at Highgrove House, the Gloucestershire family residence of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, as part of the house's first garden festival in the summer of 2015.

    The man who designed many of Princess Diana's shoes - Jimmy Choo - will attend a lunch in West Yorkshire this afternoon to help raise money for the Diana Award.

    The event will take place at the Harvey Nichols store in Leeds city centre and is part of this month's commemorations of 20 years since her death.

    Five men charged with offences in connection with the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath are due to make their first crown court appearance later.

    The men include former Merseyside and South Yorkshire chief constable Sir Norman Bettison, who was a chief inspector at South Yorkshire Police (SYP) at the time of the disaster in 1989.

    Graham Mackrell, who was the company secretary at Sheffield Wednesday, will also appear alongside former Ch Supt Donald Denton, former Det Ch Insp Alan Foster and Peter Metcalf, who was a solicitor for SYP.

    All five are due to appear at Preston Crown Court later.

    The former chief constable of West Yorkshire Sir Norman Bettison is due to make his first crown court appearance this morning charged over the Hillsborough disaster.

    He was working for the South Yorkshire force in 1989 when 96 people died in the stadium disaster in Sheffield.

    He faces four misconduct charges and will appear at Preston Crown Court alongside four other men, who've also been charged over the tragedy.

    Around 50 police officers are likely to be needed each day when fracking starts in North Yorkshire, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The force says it's learned lessons from colleagues in Lancashire over how to deal with protests at fracking sites

    Third Energy could start moving lorries on to the site in Ryedale as early as next week.

    Up to 80 police officers a day were needed at a fracking site near Preston, as campaigners staged protests.

    Campaigners there accused the Lancashire force of being heavy-handed.

    North Yorkshire is the most difficult part of our region for adults to find an NHS dentist, according to an investigation by BBC Radio York.

    Research shows just 10% of our dentists are taking on new adult patients, compared to 11% in West Yorkshire and 33%t in South Yorkshire.

    NHS England says it's committed to giving everyone the chance to use a state-funded dentist.

    These patients were queuing for an NHS dentist in Scarborough.
