As a result, she became the first British astronaut - and, of course, the first Yorkshire astronaut, too.

Luigi Pignanelli, 60, was in desperate need of a new liver after doctors told his family they did not know if he would survive long enough to find a donor.

This prompted his wife Samantha, with whom he runs the restaurant, to put out an appeal for help.

His story received a global response, with 50 people contacting the liver transplant programme at St James' Hospital in Leeds within days.

Thankfully, a liver became available closer to home and Mr Pignanelli, known as The Singing Chef, underwent surgery on 30 August and returned to his restaurant and home on Tuesday.

Mrs Pignanelli tells me: "Luigi has been overwhelmed by the response received. It moved him to tears.

"He's known and loved by many in the local area and is keen to get back to get among the customers, but he needs to rest up and get stronger first."

Anti-fracking protestors tried to stop them getting in to the site and claim that Third Energy - which is due to start production at the site at the end of the year - has broken promises.

Campaigners say local residents were told no equipment would be brought on to the site until next week.

It comes ahead of a drop-in session this afternoon at Kirby Misperton Village Hall, where local people can meet the organisations regulating Third Energy's fracking operations.
