  1. Analysis: Is South Yorkshire devolution dead in the water?published at 13:47 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

Anyone fancy electing a mayor that will have no power whatsoever? No? What if I told you it'll cost us more than £1m? Still no?

That's where we are in South Yorkshire at the moment, a £900m devolution deal appearing dead in the water after two of the four councils involved voted against the proposal.

Today's meeting between the county's council leaders was a quick end to the lingering idea that Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham might actually agree with each other.

We're left with no extra money or power, and quite possibly an elected mayor that will just be another suit in the room.

Doncaster and Barnsley say their decision to end a South Yorkshire devolution deal and seek a wider Yorkshire one is not a gamble.

But when the government says that it just won't happen, the odds look pretty stacked against them.

  2. Huddersfield man jailed for partner's murderpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

Mark Minott (pictured), 41, of the same address, was convicted of murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on 7 September.

Judge Guy Kearl QC told Minott he must serve a minimum of 18 years in jail.

People took to social media to express their anger at understaffed bars and long queues, with some describing the event as "a shambles".

Its organisers have confirmed that 250 out of about 2,000 guests left early.

They've apologised for the delays on the bar and say they'll learn lessons ahead of their next event.

  6. Listen: What next for South Yorkshire after failure of devolution meeting?published at 12:30 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

    Kevin Larkin
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

The divisions over devolution for South Yorkshire remain as stark as ever today after the failure of a meeting this morning which had been meant to sort out a deal.

South Yorkshire's four authorities are divided down the middle over how things should go.

Sheffield and Rotherham councils want a power-sharing deal for South Yorkshire, while Barnsley and Doncaster councils want to be part of a Yorkshire-wide plan.

Here's my summary of where we are now:

  7. As you like it? Crown Court's objection to York Shakespeare theatre planpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 18 September 2017

A plan to build a temporary Shakespearean theatre in York next summer is facing opposition from the Ministry of Justice.

A full-scale "pop-up" Shakespearean theatre would be of "enormous benefit" to the area, according to City of York Council.

But York Crown Court bosses are unhappy with the plan to build the 950-seat theatre on the Castle car park, close to the Crown Court and the historic Clifford's Tower.

The Ministry of Justice says it is "highly concerned" as "it will interrupt the smooth running of the Crown Court".

If the planning application to build the theatre is approved it will run between May and September next year.

However, it would mean the loss of about 135 city centre car parking spaces.

City of York Council estimates it could bring in about £7m to the city and says it would be reimbursed for the loss of parking revenue by nearly £200,000.

    Breaking

    Kevin Larkin
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

A meeting to finalise devolution plans for South Yorkshire has come to a bitter end.

The leaders of South Yorkshire's four councils came together this morning to try to overcome their differences over the best route for devolution.

Their divisions have been well-known for some time, with Barnsley and Doncaster's council leaders favouring a Yorkshire-wide deal.

But Sheffield and Rotherham's council leaders want a deal for South Yorkshire and its councils.

The failure leaves major question marks for the area and threatens to hit other plans for devolved power beyond South Yorkshire.

In the eyes of many critics, and even fans of his opponent Saul Alvarez, Golovkin seemed to have won his own clash in Las Vegas at the weekend (pictured below), but it ended in a controversial draw.

The prospect of a re-match remains strong, but Golovkin may take other fights before that happens.

If so, Saunders has placed himself in the ranks of those who could face the unbeaten Khazak.

While that would be the biggest pay day of his life, another potential opponent for Saunders is fellow Brit Amir Khan.

Meanwhile, another fighter from Sheffield, Kell Brook, suffered serious injuries to his eye socket when Golovkin beat him in five rounds last year.
