  1. Former senior policeman 'surprised' bike race restarted after crash injuriespublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    A former senior North Yorkshire police officer says he was surprised a motorbike race in which spectators were seriously injured was restarted.

    A number of people remain in hospital after the two separate collisions, during the race at Scarborough's Oliver's Mount yesterday.

    Two air ambulances were called after 10 spectators and two bike racers were injured.

    David Short was at yesterday's event. He's a former Chief Superintendent with North Yorkshire Police and a keen motorcyclist.

    He says he was surprised the race was restarted after the first accident:

    A statement from organisers did say that in view of the seriousness of the incidents they'd reluctantly decided to cancel the rest of the meeting and apologised to people attending.

    These scenes were on London Road in Sheffield yesterday.

    The Sheffield derby football match saw United come out on top away at Wednesday's Hillsborough.

    Police say they handled the intense fan rivalry at the game well.

    This scene was several miles away from Hillsborough and happened after the match.

  3. Further fracking protests expected at Kirby Mispertonpublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    More lorries carrying equipment needed for fracking are expected to arrive at a site in Ryedale later.

    The lorries are likely to be met by further protests. Nine people were charged after demonstrations in Kirby Misperton last week.

    Third Energy says fracking is safe, and it plans to start work by the end of the year.

    In May 2016 Third Energy got planning permission to frack and has started moving equipment on to the site.

    Police have arrested 12 protesters since Tuesday.

  4. Two men arrested in York on suspicion of serious sexual assaultpublished at 09:34 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Police say they have arrested two men in connection with a serious sexual assault investigation in York.

    The incident occurred in the Bootham and Marygate area at about 22:00 yesterday.

    The victim, a local woman, is receiving specialist support while enquiries continue.

    The arrested men, both from York, are being held in custody for questioning.

    Officers say anyone with information that could assist the investigation should come forward.

    Two young football fans from rival teams in Sheffield say violence at the Steel City derby match spoiled a fantastic sporting occasion.

    11-year-old Archie Wynne is an Owls fan, and 14-year-old Rhys Kidd is a staunch Blade.

    Police say they expect to make more arrests after analysing CCTV footage from yesterday's match, which Sheffield United won 2-4 at Hillsborough. There've been eleven arrests so far.

    Supporters of a scheme in York to boost bee populations are buzzing about news of a £1m grant.

    The money's come from the Biffa Award and will be used to back the Urban Buzz scheme, which supports bees and butterflies in York and seven other UK cities.

    Each of the eight cities will get a share of the money.

    Organisers Buglife will use it to build flower-filled areas that attract pollinating insects.

    A man and a woman in their 60s have been injured in an attack in York.

    A man has been charged following the "serious assault" in the city on Saturday night.

    Police were called at about 21:40 to Station Road near the Principal Hotel where a man in his 60s had sustained serious head injuries.

    A 26-year-old man and a woman in her 60s also sustained minor injuries.

    A 33-year-old man from North Shields was arrested and later charged with wounding and assault, He is due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court on 26 October.

    Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

    Harrogate Town manager, Simon Weaver, says they need to stay grounded after their 2-0 win over York City at the weekend.

    The win kept them top of National league North on goal difference.

    City boss, Gary Mills, says he wants an immediate response from his players after the defeat.

    It was the first time in their history that York City and Harrogate town have played each other in a league match.

  10. North Yorkshire to increase crew levels on new fire enginespublished at 08:24 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) is to increase crew members on some of its new fire engines after concerns were raised over their safety.

    The brigade introduced six Tactical Response Vehicles (smaller fire engines) last year.

    The new vehicles carry three firefighters compared to a crew of four or five on a standard engine.

    NYFRS said it would increase staffing on four units, after complaints from local MPs and the Fire Brigades Union.

    The review of the Tactical Response Vehicles (TRVs), follows an intervention by the new chair of the fire authority, Conservative councillor Andrew Backhouse.

    Mr Backhouse said he had ordered the changes because of "serious concerns in regards to the perceived risk to front line firefighters".

    Labour has promised a full inquiry into the so called Battle of Orgreave during the the 1984 miners' strike.

    Thousands of police officers and miners were involved in violent clashes at the coke plant in South Yorkshire.

    Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Brighton, Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said people involved in the clashes "deserve justice".

    Last year, Home Secretary Amber Rudd ruled out any investigation into the incident.

    Diane Abbott said "We finally had an inquiry into the Hillsborough tragedy thanks to the tireless campaigning of the people of Liverpool, with the support of my colleagues Andy Burnham and Steve Rotherham".

    "As Labour home secretary I promise a full inquiry into Orgreave."

    A police incident is ongoing in York city centre this morning.

    Part of Church street has been cordoned off, as has part of Bootham.

    North Yorkshire Police haven't released any more details at the moment, but have described it as a "serious incident."

  16. Arrests at Steel City derbypublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    South Yorkshire Police say they made 11 arrests when Sheffield United played Sheffield Wednesday at the Steel City derby yesterday.

    The arrests were for a varity of offences, including for public order.

    Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley said "there were a small minority of individuals who came intent on causing disruption and action was taken to address and prevent this type of behaviour".

    Three hundred police officers were on duty at Hillsborough for the first Wednesday/United match since 2012.

    United won the match 4-2.

  17. Bradford second in 'crash for cash' leaguepublished at 06:56 British Summer Time 25 September 2017

    Bradford has been named as one of the worst places in the country for crash for cash fraud.

    The scams are run by fraudsters who manufacture collisions with other road users, hoping to profit from insurance claims.

    A motorcyclist and a spectator are in hospital with serious injuries following two separate crashes at Scarborough's Oliver's Mount yesterday.

    Ten other spectators were also injured in both incidents, after two motorcyclists crashed into crowds who were watching the Gold Cup race meeting, which was cancelled following the collisions.

    In the first crash two spectators were airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, one of them with serious injuries. Another spectator was taken to Scarborough Hospital.

    Three others, including motorcyclist, Jamie Coward, were treated at the scene.

    A second collision happened three hours later, when a motorbike rider was seriously injured and taken to hospital by air ambulance.

    Two spectators were also taken to hospital. Police say three others were treated at the scene.
