    Detectives from South Yorkshire Police , externalare investigating a burglary at the Yorkshire Main Miners Welfare, Edlington Lane, Doncaster which happened just after midnight on Monday 2 October.

    A member of staff was locking up the premises when he was approached and hit over the back of the head.

    While he was unconscious, someone forced their way into the welfare club and a large quantity of cash was stolen.

    The 37-year-old man sustained a minor injury in the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment. He wasn't able to tell police how many people were involved or give a description.

    Detective Constable Fiona Bowling who is leading the investigation said: “Due to the lack of description, we are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or saw any suspicious activity in the area, to please report it to us."

    In his first interview as the new manager of York City, Martin Gray, declared, "there are some good players at the club, but there's room for improvement."

    City's new coach told me his goal is to take the club back to the football league.

    Asked about ending his five year term as boss at Darlington FC, to move to York, he said he "took no convincing" and "it was the right thing to do."

    A North Yorkshire musician is preparing to start a world record attempt by trying to play the drums non-stop for 170 hours.

    Matt Pargeter's setting up his kit in Harrogate's Victoria Shopping Centre and is preparing to try to break the world record for continuous drumming which currently stands at 133 hours.

    Matt says he's making the attempt to raise awareness and funds for local charities, all of which have helped him in the past.

    He says after finding himself homeless, he received "the most amazing support" from Mind, The Harrogate Homeless Project and The Acorn Centre.

    Now he's back on his feet, he says he wants to help the charities out by raising money through his drumming challenge.

    Exhibitors range from lawyers and accountants to craft stores and even an escape game company.

    It's been organised to showcase the independents operating in the city and to explore ways of working together to promote the value of small businesses.

    According to government statistics, 99% of businesses in the UK are designated as small or medium in size, employing fewer than 250 people.

    The co-leader of the Green Party has arrived at a fracking protest camp in North Yorkshire.

    Jonathan Bartley's told protesters he'll continue fighting against the gas extraction technique, with plans well advanced for Third Energy to start fracking at a well at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

    The firm says the process is safe, but the Greens say fracking - the process of drilling into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at rock to release gas inside - is a "dangerous and unnecessary" industry.

    There have been 28 arrests since protests began at the site as fracking equipment started to be moved in.

    A man's been injured after a car crashed into a grass cutter in Wortley, Leeds, before also hitting a barber's shop.

    It happened just before 12:00 this lunchtime at the junction of Oldfield Lane, Amberley Road and Highfield Avenue. All those roads are currently closed.

    Yorkshire Air Ambulance says its crew was called out to the scene, but was stood down after take-off.

  8. Former union leader Rodney Bickerstaffe diespublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 3 October 2017

    Rodney Bickerstaffe, the former general secretary of public service union Unison, external, has died at the age of 72.

    Mr Bickerstaffe, who grew up in Doncaster, also led the public sector union NUPE before it merged with other trade unions to form Unison.

    Current Unison general secretary Dave Prentis, has paid tribute to his predecessor, saying: "Rodney, or Bick as he was known to many, was a great personal friend to many of us and a dedicated champion of all the union members he proudly represented throughout his career".

    Mr Bickerstaffe replaced Jack Jones, the Transport and General Workers Union leader, as the president of the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) in 2001 and served for four years.

    Jan Shortt, NPC general secretary, said: "He was one of the labour movement's greats and the NPC is proud to have had the benefit of his skills, intellect and humour."

    We're just hearing that a man's been injured after a car crashed into a grass cutter and a barber's shop in Wortley in Leeds.

    Police say it happened just before noon at a mini-roundabout on Oldfield Lane near the Asda store.

    A 4x4 crashed into the grass cutter and then appears to have also collided with a barber's shop.

    All four roads connected to the roundabout have been closed.

    Police say a teenager missing from his home in North Yorkshire since the weekend has been found.

    Harry Smith, 16, from Catterick Garrison, had been missing since about 22:00 on Sunday.

    Police have confirmed in the last few minutes he was found "safe and well" last night.

    CCTV pictures have been released of two men police want to speak to after a sexual assault in Heckmondwike.

    It happened in a ginnel between the High Street and Grove Road on 16 September at about 21:00 when the 18-year-old victim was walking along the path.

    Two men approached her and one of them sexually assaulted her, one of them was carrying a wooden plank in his right hand.

    Police say they want to speak to speak to anyone who recognises the men pictured.

    A crowdfunding appeal has been launched by campaigners involved in a row with Sheffield City Council over tree-felling.

    As part of Streets Ahead, an ongoing £2bn project to improve roads and footpaths in Sheffield, about 5,500 trees have been cut down since 2012.

    The authority insists those earmarked for felling were "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory, external", but campaigners from Sheffield Tree Action Groups (STAG) say some healthy trees have also been lost.

    Sheffield City Council was granted a court injunction in August to prevent STAG members blocking the felling operation by "trespassing within safety barriers".

    Three members of STAG were asked to pay court costs of £1,000 each.

    It takes a lot to shock a Yorkshire farmer, but York-born lamb Fiver has done just that.

    Farmer Andrew Bell couldn’t believe his eyes when the female lamb was born with five legs.

    Luckily his daughter, who is a vet, was on hand to help with the delivery.

    The little lamb is the star of a TV programme with quite a long title. She features in The Yokshire Vet: A Five-Legged Lamb And Other Curious Creatures which is on Channel 5 tonight.

    The programme follows Julian Norton and Peter Wright, from Skeldale veterinary practice in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

    A 22-year-old motorcyclist has died after the bike she was riding collided with a car in Baildon, near Bradford.

    It happened at about 18:15 yesterday when the woman's white Triumph Speed was travelling up Hollins Hill towards Guiseley and collided with a white Audi A3 travelling in the opposite direction.

    The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman, was later spoken to by police at the scene.

    Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw events leading up to it, is being asked to contact police.

    Sheffield's latest Master Cutler is due to be officially installed at a ceremony later this morning.

    Ken Cooke, a former steel business owner and an ex-Sheffield Wednesday board member, succeeds former master cutler Richard Edwards.

    As part of the role, Mr Cooke is expected to raise funds for charity and act as an ambassador for business in Sheffield and the City Region.

    The city's first Master Cutler, Robert Sorby, was appointed almost 400 years ago.

    A Cutlers' Company, external spokesperson said the body was formed 1624 "to protect the city's craftsmen and their craft, ensuring marks were registered, apprentices engaged, blades correctly made and the rules of business adhered to".

    Today's ceremony is expected to take place at Sheffield's Cutlers Hall at about 10:30 followed by a service at the cathedral.

    A scheme which asks overweight NHS patients to lose weight before they can get routine surgery could be rolled out in West Yorkshire.

    It's already in place in some parts of North Yorkshire, but now officials in Kirklees are looking at doing the same thing.

    A man's been charged with assaulting a police officer and obstructing the highway following a fracking protest in North Yorkshire on Monday.

    The 23-year-old was arrested following an incident in which a police officer was pushed over and a security guard was bitten as protesters locked themselves into a metal device on the road.

    Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man's been charged with obstructing a police officer after being removed from scaffolding by police during the protest at Kirby Misperton yesterday afternoon.

    A 65-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, common assault and obstructing the highway has been released on bail as enquiries continue, police say.
