  1. Ex police chief 'asked staff to chauffeur his wife'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 5 October 2017

    A former West Yorkshire Police chief abused overtime payments, made inappropriate sexual comments to female colleagues and asked staff to pick his wife up from the airport, according to court documents.

    Mark Gilmore, the ex-chief constable of West Yorkshire Police, is also said to have sworn at and "thrown items at staff in rage".

    The claims were made by the region's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) in papers submitted to the High Court - Mr Gilmore has denied the allegations.

    According to the documents, PCC Mark Burns-Williamson was made aware of the claims against Mr Gilmore, which were later assessed as gross misconduct, after at least one whistleblower came forward in August 2014.

    The Foreign Office has said it is doing "all it can" for six British seamen jailed in India, including two from Yorkshire.

    Mark Field, the UK's minister for Asia, visited the men on Wednesday at Puzhal prison in Chenai.

    The six men, including Nicholas Simpson from North Yorkshire and Paul Towers, from Pocklington near York, were arrested in October 2013 on illegal weapons charges.

    They were convicted and jailed for five years in 2016.

    The men have continued to protest their innocence and Mr Field said he updated them on the progress of their appeal.

    "These men have been separated from their families for four years and have had an incredibly difficult experience," he said.

    The men all worked for the US maritime company AdvanFort providing anti-piracy protection when their ship, MV Seaman Guard Ohio, was detained and weapons found.

    Staff at the University of Leeds have announced three consecutive days of strike action in a dispute over changes to the university's dismissal policy.

    Members of the University and College Union (UCU) voted for strikes from the 11 to 13 October, the union said.

    Vicky Blake, of UCU in Leeds, said the strikes were "a last resort" but the university needed to "urgently reconsider these damaging changes".

    The university said it was "simply modernising the procedures".

    A High Court challenge to the law on assisted dying has been dismissed.

    Noel Conway, 67, from Shrewsbury, who has motor neurone disease, wanted a doctor to be allowed to prescribe a lethal dose when his health deteriorates.

    Currently any doctor helping him to die would face up to 14 years in prison.

    His lawyers had argued he faced a stark choice, which was unfair and the law needed to change.

    But Lord Justice Sales, Mrs Justice Whipple and Mr Justice Garnham rejected his case.

    Ian Pratt from Barnsley also has motor neurone disease and has campaigned on the right to die issue. He spoke to the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire show about his wish to be allowed to end his life when he chooses.

    A man's being treated in hospital after the hydraulic crane he was operating fell over in Scarborough.

    It happened at about 09:45 in Holbeck Road, which has been closed in both directions since the incident.

    The injured man was taken to Scarborough Hospital, his injuries are not believed to be serious.

    Tonight Leeds Light Night returns for its 13th year and the night time display of light installations around the city can be viewed over the next two nights.

    Concerns are growing over a "vulnerable" West Yorkshire man who's been missing for about 24 hours and who police believe could now be in Lancashire or North Yorkshire.

    Anthony Rutherford, 32, was last seen at about lunchtime yesterday in Ripponden, near Halifax.

    He's described as white, about 6ft tall, with dark brown hair and of broad build. He may be wearing jeans and a brown jacket.

    He is believed to have been travelling in a black Nissan Pixo, registration YK59 UET, and he's known to have contacts in Burnley and North Yorkshire as well as in Calderdale.

    Anyone who has any information about Mr Rutherford's whereabouts is being asked to contact police who are also appealing for him to get in touch.

    The A64 into Leeds and onto the Inner Ring Road is currently at a standstill after an accident this morning:

    It happened at about 09:50 and we understand there's also been another accident on the opposite side of the carriageway.

    Roads around Marsh Lane, Crown Point Road and Duke Street are also affected by very heavy traffic just now so best avoid the area if you can for the moment.

    After a four year exile from their home city, Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club have a new home confirmed at the Olympic Legacy Park.

    The Championship club has been without a permanent home since the 2013 demolition of the Don Valley Stadium.

    They've spent the last few seasons playing their matches at Doncaster's Keepmoat stadium and last summer at Belle Vue in Wakefield.

    They're effectively returning to their old stamping ground since the Olympic Legacy Park is being built on the site of Don Valley Stadium.

    "There has been a massive effort from everyone concerned to get us over the line," Sheffield chairman Chris Noble said. "

    "In the longer term, we will see the development of a stand with a capacity of 3,000 on one side and other semi-permanent stands on the other three sides. We are so happy to be back in the city of our birth after what has been an extremely difficult and worrying time."

    Police are urging the public to come forward with information after a cat was found dead with severe head injuries.

    The pet was discovered on the bonnet of a parked vehicle on Monkton Road, York.

    It was let out by its owner at about 01:00 on Sunday.

    Police say a vet who examined the cat concluded it had suffered "massive head trauma not consistent with a traffic collision".

  19. 'The Broken Bridge': Student's flood film tipped to scoop three awardspublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 5 October 2017

    A film student's documentary about devastating floods in his hometown of Tadcaster in North Yorkshire has been nominated for three awards at an Independent Film Festival.

    George Bartlett's The Broken Bridge is up for Best Short Film, Best Music and Best Documentary at the Fisheye Film Festival in High Wycombe.

    George, says he began the project when Tadcaster's bridge reopened, having being closed for more than a year, after its partial collapse during the destruction of the 2015 Christmas floods:

  20. DFS profits slumppublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 5 October 2017

    Doncaster based sofa chain DFS recorded a decline in their profits due to what it has described as "continuing uncertainty in the economy".

    The company recorded £50.1m of pre-tax profits in the year to July, a 22.3% fall compared with the previous year.

    Revenue however was up slightly by 0.9% to £762.7m.

    DFS flagged in August that profits would take a hit from uncertainty caused by the snap general election and warm weather, which led to weak trading at its stores.

    It says profits also took a tumble because of the Brexit-induced collapse in the pound.

    Chief executive Ian Filby said: "We have continued to make good strategic progress across all our key areas of growth, while our financial performance reflects the current challenges of the UK furniture market."
