    A homeless man has died in a shop doorway in York.

    Police say emergency services were called to the 46-year-old man in Goodramgate in the early hours of Monday.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    North Yorkshire Police say at this stage there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

    The man, of no fixed address, was said to be sleeping in the doorway of Watkinsons Shoes where a note and flowers have been left by friends.

  2. Leeds scientists develop disinfectant door pad to fight NHS germspublished at 09:37 British Summer Time 5 October 2017

    Scientists at the University of Leeds have helped to develop a hospital door entry pad that disinfects itself.

    The product is designed to replace traditional aluminium plates on hospital doors.

    It incorporates a textile material that dispenses a small quantity of alcohol gel onto the pad as the door is pushed open.

    The new device is now being produced by a company, following seven years of research.

    South Yorkshire Police, external have issued CCTV images as part of their investigation into a sexual assault on a 19-year-old woman on the X1 bus from Sheffield to Meadowhall.

    Police want to trace a man who got onto the bus at the Wicker pharmacy on Saturday 26 August.

    On the journey from the Wicker to Meadowhall between 11:30 and 11:45 on Saturday 26 August, he is alleged to have sexually assaulted the woman.

    The man is described as being between 40 and 50-years-old, of stocky build, between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 9ins tall and was wearing navy tracksuit bottoms and a cream cardigan.

    Despite extensive enquiries, no arrests have been made and the man has not yet been identified.

    People in North Yorkshire are being asked for their views on the future of Northallerton's Friarage Hospital.

    The Trust which runs it says it's facing several challenges and has to consider what the hospital might look like in future.

    South Tees Trust says there are problems recruiting staff at the Friarage which is impacting on critical care, overnight anaesthetic cover and accident and emergency.

    Hospital bosses say they want to talk about their challenges with the public and have organised a series of drop in events.

    They also say the want to make sure services are sustainable for patients.

    A leading Leeds GP is warning the government that doctor's surgeries may have to ban new patients to cope with growing pressure on services.

    Dr Richard Vautrey is the chairman of the BMA's GP Committee.

    He's written to the Health Secretary calling for a meeting to discuss the "urgent challenges" facing family doctors.

    Dr Vautrey says GP practices are reaching the point where closing their doors to new patients could be the "only viable way to ensure patient safety"

    He highlighted a recent BMA poll which found that more than half of GP practices would consider closing their doors to new patients to offset mounting pressure on services.

    Dr Vautrey said: "With unprecedented patient demand, a recruitment and retention crisis, huge workforce shortfalls and major practice premises problems, it is no wonder GPs are having to consider action such as suspending their patient lists."

    A planning application has been submitted to build a distribution, warehouse and industrial park on the former Outokompu site in Sheffield.

    The 48-acre site on Shepcote Lane has been vacant since the steel company closed its plant in 2008.

    Peel Logistics Property bought the land earlier this year with a view to developing a logistics park which could create up to 2,000 jobs.

    Neil Dickinson, chief operating officer at Peel Logistics said: “We look forward to building out up to 838,000sqft of logistics floor space, and to providing a broad range of local job opportunities.”

    A new scheme to support children with mental health problems is being rolled out to schools in Barnsley.

    The scheme, in all 10 secondary schools in the town, is putting mental health workers alongside teaching staff to offer counselling.

    A police watchdog investigating the death of a man shot by police said it cannot publish its findings until criminal proceedings are complete.

    Yassar Yaqub, 28, from Huddersfield, was a passenger in a car when he was shot near junction 24 of the M62 on 2 January.

    A gun was found in the footwell of the Audi car by West Yorkshire Police.

    The driver, Moshin Amin, from Dewsbury, is due to stand trial accused of firearms offences.

    He denies charges of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, possession of a sound moderator and possession of ammunition.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it was unable to release details of forensic examinations at this time.

    Northern rail services across Yorkshire will be disrupted again today as members of the RMT union are out on strike.

    The action follows a similar walkout on Tuesday.

    Unions and rail companies are no closer to agreeing on the issue of removing guards from trains.Many of Northern's services are expected to be cancelled.

    The rail operator says they are investing millions in services, but unions disagree.

    A North Yorkshire man, who's been living rough for a year, claims he could "starve to death" before being able to appeal against a sexual risk order.

    John O'Neill, from York, made national headlines two years ago when he was ordered to tell the police 24 hours before he had sex.

    North Yorkshire Police had applied for the order after he was cleared of rape in 2015.

    That order's now been changed to "as soon as reasonably practicable."

    But John says the remaining conditions mean he can't work and has been left destitute:

    As you may be aware, Northern rail services across Yorkshire will be disrupted today as members of the RMT union are out on strike for the second time this week>

    The company says it will be operating a limited service, with about 46% of trains running and it's asking people to carefully consider whether their journey is necessary.

    The services which are available across Yorkshire appear to be running pretty much to time so far.
