  1. Listen: Is a night out in Huddersfield all that bad?published at 09:45 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

    Liz Green
    Presenter, BBC Radio Leeds

Yesterday we heard about recommendations for Huddersfield to have a more up-market night-time culture.

As a result on BBC Radio Leeds I said the town was "not what it used to be" and, in doing so, ruffled a few feathers.

So much so that Huddersfield MP, Barry Sheerman, issued a challenge.

He wants us both to explore the town centre together on a Saturday night.

Here's a bit of our chat this morning, which resulted in us deciding to take a weekend stroll:

A 72-year-old man has been seriously hurt after his vehicle was in collision with a stationary car in Sheffield.

Police say a black Toyota Avensis collided with a silver Hyundai at the junction of Norton Park View on Norton Lane.

The accident happened about 19:25 on Wednesday, 11 October.

Police want to speak to any witnesses.

  3. Listen: A hundred years of steel for Sheffield's Bettypublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

One of Sheffield's women of steel turns 100 years old this weekend.

"Women of Steel" is the name given to the women who worked in Sheffield's steelworks during the world wars.

There was a bit of a party yesterday for Betty Newsham, who worked in the James Neill Steel works during the World War Two.

The party was thrown by the Sheffield Royal Society of the Blind.

At one point Betty described what it was like when enemy planes attacked:

Dr Georgia Mavria (pictured) is based at the university and has discovered a molecule which allows breast cancer cells access a blood supply and ultimately the brain.

In West Yorkshire around 350 women die every year, because the disease has spread.

Now a charity called Breast Cancer Now has given Leeds University £250,000 to study this molecule.

  5. Power boats brought in for faster flood responsepublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

More than £500,000 has been spent on new power boats to help West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue respond to flooding.

The service says that if there's a repeat of the Boxing Day floods in 2015, it will be better prepared.

The new equipment will be stationed in Yorkshire, but could be deployed anywhere in the country.

  6. Listen: Praise for work of Sheffield's 'School of Sanctuary'published at 07:43 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

A primary school in Sheffield has become the first in the city to be designated a "School of Sanctuary".

A national award has recognised the work done by Oasis Academy Watermead, to provide a welcome for all children, particularly those fleeing persecution overseas or domestic violence.

School pastoral manager, Leigh Singleton, says the pupils speak 33 different languages, but this is seen as an opportunity not a challenge by the staff:

  7. Futurist Theatre's days could be numberedpublished at 07:24 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

Planning officers are recommending that the Futurist Theatre building in Scarborough is demolished.

An application to knock down the seafront venue is to be considered by councillors next week.

    Futurist

There have been more than 70 objections to plans to demolish the venue which once played host to the Beatles and Shirley Bassey.

It have been closed for almost four years and the Theatres Trust claims there is nothing to show that the building is not viable either as a theatre or other community use.

But the owners, Scarborough Borough Council, argue that it would need a subsidy of between £6m and £11m to keep it going.

  8. Listen: Leeds outdoor market may be reduced to make way for carspublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

It's emerged officials are considering reducing the size of Leeds outdoor market to make way for a car park.

BBC Radio Leeds has learned the council's looking into the idea, to make it easier for people to visit the market.

Earlier this year, traders were given temporary rent reductions, after complaining about reduced takings.

Michael Dolan runs a fruit and veg stall on the market, he says making the market smaller is not the answer:

  9. Bradford Army Cadet Force among lifesavers honoured for South Africa rescuepublished at 07:00 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

She had a severe asthma attack on a mountain in Southern Drakensberg, according to the Royal Humane Society.

And it took the three-man team over five hours to carry her to safety.

Hayden Duncalf, from Glan Conwy, Conwy county, Andrew McNamara, from Bradford, and Richard Breese from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, will get awards.

The drama unfolded at 2,200ft (670m) just after the decision was taken to abandon the trek due to "treacherous" conditions caused by 80mph (128km) winds.
