    The dangers caused by mud on roads are being underlined by North Yorkshire County Council.

    The council says it's received numerous complaints and is warning farmers that they could be held liable, external in the event of accidents.

    The warning comes after a farmer in Devon was questioned by police over an accident involving a biker and a car.

  2. Heckmondwike man jailed for historical sex offencespublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    A man from Heckmondwike has been sent to jail for nine years for sexually abusing children in the 1990s.

    Richard Prendergast, 45, of Westfield Road, Heckmondwike was found guilty in September of non- recent sexual abuse against two girls aged under 14.

    Det Con Paul Greatorex from West Yorkshire Police said: "Prendergast’s victims were young and innocent and were unable to defend themselves. He subjected them to terrible ordeals and then refused to admit his guilt."

    He was sentenced earlier today to nine years in prison and he must also be on the sex offender register for life.

    Well, you might be wrong - turns out a posh aristocrat in Suffolk uses her local one, and is now appealing for help to find her necklace.

    When we say necklace, we actually mean one of her family heirlooms - a pendant crafted from gold, emerald and diamonds. Lady Somerleyton noticed it was missing after visiting the Pakefield, Suffolk branch of the supermarket.

    Lord and Lady Somerleyton's family home Somerleyton Hall, near Lowestoft lies within a 5,000-acre estate and they have offered a reward for the pendent's safe return.

    The work of Julia Nekooi in helping patients at Sheffield Children's Hospital has seen her win a national award to mark her efforts.

    She met Prince Harry at the ceremony for the WellChild Awards at a reception last night in London.

    WellChild, external is a national charity for seriously ill children, and has Prince Harry as its Patron.

    It helps to pay for programmes aimed at enabling care to be given to children in their own homes wherever possible.

    Julia Nekooi was picked from hundreds of nominations from across the UK to win the category of Best Nurse in the awards.

    A man found unconscious and with serious facial injuries at a Rotherham reservoir earlier this week is thought to have been attacked, police say.

    The 37-year-old man was found on an embankment at Ulley Country Park in Aughton on Monday morning.

    He is still in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

    South Yorkshire Police say they're now looking at whether the man was assaulted at the park or was attacked somewhere else and then taken there.

    Kidney patients who get treatment in Sheffield say they're concerned about access to their life-saving treatment after a contract to transport them to hospital for dialysis was given to a different firm.

    Previously, the NHS had used City Taxis in Sheffield for patient transport, but earlier this month the contract was changed to Doncaster-based Premier Care Direct.

    Delays in getting people to hospital have been reported since the contract changed hands, with some patients telling the BBC that service has become so bad they've had to find another way of getting to hospital.

    Ian Hill, who lives in Sheffield and needs dialysis, says he fears people will suffer unless the transport service is improved:

  10. Asad Khan inquest: Coroner reaches narrative verdictpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    A coroner has recorded a narrative verdict at the inquest of Asad Khan, saying that there was no evidence to suggest he was being bullied.

    The the 11-year-old schoolboy was found hanged by his mother at his home on Tile Street, on 28 September 2016.

    His family, who believe he was being bullied, had raised concerns about a choking game at the school and walked out of an earlier pre-inquest hearing over concerns about what evidence would be heard.

    But during the inquest Det Sgt Matthew Holdsworth, of West Yorkshire Police said "Several children said they'd initially seen Asad being bullied."

    He added "When spoken to again, the actions changed and were disproved by other lines of inquiry."

    Police are investigating a blaze at a former Leeds pub as potential case of arson.

    The George IV Hotel on Grove Road in Hunslet caught light at about midnight, two fire crews were sent to tackle the flames.

    Fire investigation teams are now on site trying to work out how the fire started while police have confirmed they are investigating it as arson.

    One former regular Joanne Follis said she was "devastated" at the sight of the blaze.

    She said "I'm proud to have been one of the last regulars was a great feeling in that pub will be sadly missed."

    The Yorkshire Evening Post reported back in June that police were recommending that the pub be closed down, external because it had been used as a weapons and drugs den.

    Unemployment figures published this morning show that the jobless total has fallen nationally in the three months to August to a 12-year low.

    It's down by 52,000 to 1.4 million.

    In Yorkshire and the Humber, the jobless figure fell by two-thousand to 128- thousand; that's 4.8 percent of the workforce.

    Looking at these little robots, you might not think they're up to much. But scientists in North Yorkshire hope they could transform the way we provide healthcare - and even have applications in space.

    The design is inspired by origami with the ability to fold and biodegrade.

    They have been developed by scientists from the University of York and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    A man from Doncaster who has Jacob Rees-Mogg's name tattooed on his chest has now met the politician.

    Ross Atkinson made national news in August over his £50 tattoo which reads "Moggmentum".

    He says he was surprised to find that his hero drank coffee, thinking him to be a tea-drinker.

  18. Return of tall ship is an historic Endeavour for Whitbypublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    A replica of one of the most famous ships in the history of maritime exploration is being prepared for a new voyage along the North York Moors coast to Whitby.

    In August, a partnership led by Whitby businessman Andrew Fiddler, purchased HM Bark Endeavour, one of only two full-scale replicas in the world of the ship commanded by explorer Capt James Cook for his voyage to Australia and New Zealand.

    Mr Fiddler now plans to spend nearly £750,000 refurbishing it and then relocating it next year to Whitby, where the original Endeavour was built in 1764.

    He intends re-opening the craft as an historic tourist attraction and centre of learning for schools and colleges.

    Its arrival in Whitby in 2018 will coincide with the 250th anniversary of Cook setting sail on Endeavour to circumnavigate and chart New Zealand and chart the East coast of Australia.

    Catriona McLees, from the North York Moors National Park Authority said: "We're delighted to support the project, particularly with Cook’s early years being spent near Roseberry Topping and Great Ayton, before he moved to Staithes and on to Whitby, where his maritime career began."

    Police have just issued this picture to try to trace missing 16-year-old Kye Albelda who is also known as Kye Bowry.

    Kye went missing from Lincoln on October 15 and officers think he may have travelled to London or the Doncaster area.
