    A West Yorkshire man who helped a church minister sexually abuse six women under the pretence of exorcising their demons has been jailed for more than eight years.

    Laurence Peterson, 59, of Eric Street, Keighley, stopped the victims of John Wilson from escaping during "prayer sessions" as he sexually abused them.

    Peterson was convicted today of conspiring with Wilson to commit indecent assaults and aiding and abetting his colleague.

    The offences took place between 1984 to 2010 and involved women who attended the church seeking spiritual comfort.

    Peterson was jailed for eight years and two months for his part in the abuse.

    Highways officials say they intend to make a motorist pay for the damage caused to a newly-resurfaced road in Scarborough.

    The freshly laid tarmac, costing £600,000, on Royal Albert Drive, was damaged on Sunday night, when a driver performed wheel spins on the road.

    It'll cost more than £50,000 to repair the damage.

    South Yorkshire Police are appealing for help to find a 45-year-old man who went missing from the Armthorpe Road area, external yesterday morning.

    Jason Dunn, who is about 5ft 6ins tall with dark hair, was last seen at about 09:50 on Wednesday and officers are becoming increasingly concerned for his welfare.

    Police believe he may be wearing grey trousers, a white top and a black coat. He is described as having hair which is long on top and short at the sides and he wears two big earrings in both ears.

    If you’ve seen or heard from Jason, or know where he is, you're being asked to contact police.

  5. Anti-fracking protesters arrested after release from concrete devicespublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Four people have been arrested at an anti-fracking protest at a site in North Yorkshire.

    It's after protesters locked themselves into metal and concrete devices which were blocking both ends of Habton Road, Kirby Misperton.

    Police say they were cut free and the road has now been reopened.

    Meanwhile, a further four people have appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to wilfully obstructing a highway during another protest at the same site.

    They are the first to appear in court on charges arising from the anti-fracking protests at Kirby Misperton which started last month.

    All four were bailed. No date has been set for a trial, but there will be a hearing on 11 January 2018 for legal arguments.

  8. Shop staff injured in 'nasty' armed robbery in Bradfordpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Police have released CCTV images of three men they want to speak to after an armed robbery in Bradford.

    Last Saturday evening, three masked men armed with metal bars went into a shop on Beacon Road and assaulted the staff.

    They stole the till and boxes of cigarettes before they left in what's believed to be a "13"-plate Ford Transit.

    The people in the shop, two men and a woman, were slightly injured in the attack but didn't need to go to hospital.

    Drugs and cash have been recovered by police officers during an operation at HMP Lindholme, external.

    The operation, on Thursday 12 October, netted "a large quantity" of money and over 1kg of cannabis, police say.

    As a result, two men, Werner Berning, 28, and Matthew Wiles, 29, of HMP Lindholme, have been charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

    Following an appearance before Doncaster Magistrates' Court they were remanded into custody until their next appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 6 November.

    Police officers also recovered over 400 grams of cocaine, 140 grams of heroin and they seized an electronic stun gun device from a property on Church Street in Bawtry.

    Andrew Jones, 35, from Church Street, Bawtry, was arrested and later charged with possession with intent to supply controlled drugs and a firearms offence.

    He appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court and has since been remanded into custody until his next appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 13 November.

    The 26-year-old joined the Elland Road side from Bristol City in August 2016 and has made 58 appearances in all competitions.

    He is the only player to have started all 15 of the club's games so far this season.

    Thomas Christiansen's side are sixth in the Championship and travel to Ashton Gate to face Ayling's former side on Saturday.

    A replica of the ship Captain James Cook used to sail to Australia and New Zealand in the 1760s is to become part of a new tourist attraction in Whitby.

    Endeavour, based at Stockton, Teesside, was built as a floating museum for £2.5m in 1993 but was sold in August.

    Barnsley poet Ian McMillan and the Salford composer Alan Edward Williams have collaborated to create an opera with a northern accent.

    It's called The Arsonists, external and is the first opera ever written to be sung entirely in a northern English accent.

    It will premiere next month at the New Aldelphi Theatre in Salford.

    A social worker from Doncaster has been nominated as a "Woman of the Year".

    Last year one of Lauren Docherty's Facebook posts about her friend Faiza went viral.

    It ended up in bus stops across the country as part of a Facebook campaign about changing cultural perceptions.

    Now Lauren has been nominated for an award, external at the Woman of the Year lunch. The event picks 400 women from across the country who have made a contribution to society.

  15. Protesters block road near North Yorkshire fracking sitepublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Four anti-fracking protesters have locked themselves into "devices" at different ends of a road in Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire, according to police.

    Habton Road is currently completely blocked at two points, with two groups of people lying in the middle of the road with their arms locked in the concrete and metal devices.

    Officers say they are working to remove the protesters to restore access as soon as possible.

    Third Energy was granted planning permission for fracking at the site at Kirby Misperton, between Malton and Pickering, in May 2016.

    It is due to be the first UK site to carry out the technique since a ban was lifted in 2012.

    Opponents say fracking can cause water contamination, earthquakes and noise and traffic pollution.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan has been given permission to wear trainers in his second-round match at the English Open in Barnsley after a row about his footwear earlier this week.

    The five-time world champion, 41, beat Zhang Anda 4-1 in the first round in trainers after injuring his ankle.

    He said he was then told by organisers at Barnsley Metrodome that he must wear the correct footwear against Mark Davis.

    But World Snooker said on Wednesday it had exempted him from "standard dress code protocol" to "help manage the effects of an ankle injury".

  18. Failed ram-raid leaves new hole-in-the-wall in Whitbypublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Robbers have been left empty-handed after a failed cash machine ram-raid at a supermarket in Whitby, North Yorkshire, in the early hours of this morning.

    A group of three or four men used a tractor in an effort to remove the ATM from the wall of the Sainsbury's supermarket on Stainsacre Lane.

    Police say the raid was unsuccessful and the cash machine was left on the floor inside the supermarket.

    It's believed the suspects made off in a silver Audi estate car in the direction of Scarborough.

    The farm vehicle and a white Ford Transit van were recovered from the scene and forensic examinations are now being conducted, police say.

    Today's attempted theft comes after a cash machine was stolen using a JCB in the village of Bishopthorpe, near York, earlier this month.

    Public meetings and drop-in sessions are to be held so people can find out more about proposals aimed at improving urgent care, external in Sheffield.

    The local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says people find the current system confusing and hard to access quickly.

    Under new plans, a walk-in centre in the city centre and a minor injuries unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital would be replaced with urgent treatment centres at the Northern General Hospital (pictured) and Sheffield Children's Hospital

    Groups of GP practices will also work together to offer urgent appointments within 24 hours, while urgent eye appointments would be offered at locations across the city rather than at the Emergency Eye Clinic at the Royal Hallamshire.

    The changes would be supported by an improved system where people can contact their practice or call 111 and would be assessed over the phone, according to the CCG.
