  1. Full steam ahead? Not-so-Flying Scotsman stopped in its trackspublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Things didn't go quite to plan yesterday as Yorkshire's record-breaking Flying Scotsman, the world's most famous steam locomotive, was halted while on a trip to East Anglia.

    The locomotive was due to travel from York to Norwich but was stopped at Peterborough, with trip organisers saying the loco's driving axle box was found to be "running slightly warm".

    They say it's only the second time the Flying Scotsman, which was built in Doncaster and which is kept on display at York's National Railway Museum, has had problems since returning to service in 2016.

    Built in 1923, the Flying Scotsman soon became the star of the British rail network, pulling the first train to break the 100mph barrier in 1934.

    The National Railway Museum in York said it would provide an update following an inspection of the engine.

  2. West Yorkshire's pothole problem costs thousands in compensationpublished at 08:46 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    Almost £46,000 has been paid out in compensation in the last year by West Yorkshire's councils to people whose cars were damaged by potholes.

    A study by an insurance company's found more than £1m has been spent repairing more than 53,000 potholes.

    Earlier this year, it was revealed one in six roads in Yorkshire will need to be repaired, or even closed, within the next five years because of potholes.

    The study also found the number of potholes filled by councils fell by 19% in England last year, with local authorities needing £12bn to bring the roads up to scratch.

    South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after a 15-year-old girl was attacked in Balby, external, Doncaster, last month.

    It happened at about 09:45 on Thursday 28 September as the teenager walked along Shelley Avenue.

    A man is believed to have grabbed the girl, demanding her mobile phone.

    The teenager screamed before running away from the scene. She suffered bruising to her arm.

    The man was reportedly wearing dark clothing and had his face covered.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    The parents of a North Yorkshire man who's been missing for a week are "desperate" to hear from him, police say.

    Richard Taylor, 30, from South Milford, was last seen on Thursday 12 October. It's known he visited the Betfred shop and Morrisons store in Knottingley early that afternoon.

    It's believed he then drove his "distinctive" gold Ford Ranger Wildcat pick-up truck to a lay-by at the Old Mushroom farm, near Gateforth, with a man matching his description seen there at about 14:00.

    The vehicle was later discovered on Saturday evening, unattended and insecure with the keys still inside.

    Police say they don't believe anyone else is involved in Mr Taylor's disappearance but are "keeping an open mind".

    Det Supt Dai Malyn says: "Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us to reunite Richard with his family.

    "The work we've carried out as part of the investigation may suggest Richard is anxious or worried."

    Mr Taylor's described as white, 5ft 6ins tall, with mousy hair, of slim build, with one blue and one brown eye. He was wearing faded blue jeans, a navy polo shirt and possibly a light coloured jumper or top.

  6. Parents' views sought over collapsed Wakefield schools trustpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 19 October 2017

    The collapse of the education trust which ran 12 schools in West Yorkshire and eight in South Yorkshire is due to be discussed at a public meeting later.

    Wakefield City Academies Trust pulled out of the schools last month, saying it didn't think it could make improvements quickly enough.

    The Department for Education said many of the schools within the trust, external were performing below the national average.

    The government is proposing to split up the schools between eight trusts, and parents are being asked for their views.

    A new cycling circuit near Lakeside in Doncaster is coming closer to becoming a reality.

    The scheme, external would see the new circuit built on land close to Doncaster Dome.

    It'll include an all-weather surface, snaking around the existing rear car park of the Dome.

    The council has now applied for funding from cycling governing body British Cycling, which supports such schemes.

    Damage caused to Scarborough's newly-resurfaced seafront during a car rally at the weekend is expected to cost £25,000 to repair.

    Hundreds of cars took part in the rally on Marine Drive.
