The four-year Leeds University Dialect and Heritage project records the rich variety of words used in different areas for the same object.

The research began in the 1940s, with hundreds of recordings being made across England.

Now, Leeds University's been given funding to look at revisiting the same families to see how big a change there has been down the generations - and to chart how many regional words survive.

The contents of the archive will be made publicly available online and researchers will work with museums across England to display parts of the archives which are relevant to their region for the first time.

  4. Charity rescue bid for condemned 150-year-old Sheffield treepublished at 07:12 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

The Vernon Oak in Dore was due to be chopped down this week, which led to a protester climbing into its branches on Monday in a bid to protect it.

Now, the Trees for Cities charity has offered to pay for engineering works to keep the oak.

Sheffield City Council says it's currently in discussions with the charity and will give more information at a later date.

    oAK

As part of Streets Ahead, an ongoing £2bn project to improve roads and footpaths in Sheffield, about 5,500 trees have been cut down in the city since 2012.

The authority insists those earmarked for felling were either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory," but campaigners say some healthy trees have also been lost.

However, campaigners claim many of the trees classed as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which should not be cut down."

Elise Donoghue was reported missing last night after leaving her drama class at York Theatre Royal.

She's not thought to be carrying any money or to have access to a mobile phone.

Police are urgently appealing for information to help find her.

Officers say there's a possibility Elise was heading to York Railway Station and boarded a train heading towards the North West, where she has friends in the Cheshire area.
