    A man's denied murdering 29 year-old Tyron Charles after his body was discovered on remote moorland in West Yorkshire.

    Police found the body five weeks after Tyron Charles was reported missing by his family.

    An inquest last month it emerged he died from a single gunshot to the head before his remains were found near Oxenhope last month.

    Today, 28 year-old James Sutcliffe from Hillcrest Road, Denhome appeared before a judge at Bradford Crown Court via a video link from prison in Hull.

    He entered a not guilty plea before being told he will go on trial on 12 March the next year.

    A teenager has been awarded compensation for nerve damage suffered at birth in Doncaster.

    The £500,000 award has been made by the High Court in London against Doncaster NHS Trust over the birth at Montagu Hospital.

    The judge heard that the teenager has done well at school and is able to play rugby and is studying at college.

    The Trust denied hospital staff were at fault and today has agreed to the financial settlement.

    As part of the agreement the court has ordered that the teenager cannot be identified.

  4. Victorian stable block opens as York-based college's newest outpostpublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    A Victorian stable block has reopened as part of a North Yorkshire-based college following a £3.5m renovation.

    The Grade II-listed Central Lodge, built in Stewart Park in Middlesbrough in 1858, has now become the Middlesbrough campus of York-based Askham Bryan College.

    The building will still be linked to animals as courses available at the campus include agricultural and equine management.

    The Heritage Lottery Fund gave £3.2m for the restoration.

    For most, her soon-to-be-husband Charles Bronson - now called Charles Salvador - is one of the UK's most violent prisoners.

    "It's a marvel we make it work," says Paula, 37, who marries Bronson, 64, in the confines of HMP Wakefield next Tuesday.

    Bronson, a former bare-knuckle boxer who was first jailed for armed robbery in 1974, will not be able to attend his own wedding reception.

    Last night "riot police" were sent to two areas of Leeds to deal with youths who had barricaded roads, set fire to bins and had thrown fireworks at the emergency service.

    No-one was injured and no property was damaged at either incident on Harehills Road in Harehills and Queens Road in Hyde Park.

    Officers now say they investigating who was taking part in the disturbances and that they will take "appropriate action" against them.

  9. Watch: The spy in the cab? Police HGV helps catch 500 'dangerous' driverspublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    An unmarked HGV has helped police in Yorkshire catch more than 500 dangerous drivers in two years.

    The vehicle means officers can see into cabs and spot offenders.

    One driver was filmed checking his phone and driving with one foot up on the dashboard as he travelled from the M18 onto the M62 near Goole.

    The HGV got stuck under a bridge on Globe Road not far from the railway station.

    Police say the Lorry is 16 feet high, but the bridge only offered 14ft 3ins of clearance.

    West Yorkshire Police's traffic officers tweeted "Globe Rd, Leeds - 16’ high HGV vs bridge with 14’3 clearance - what is there to say?"

    Traffic is now flowing around Meadowhall in Sheffield after flood prevention works.

    In all £19 million is being spent on measures in the Lower Don Valley.

    The area was badly hit by flooding in 2007 as this image from the time shows.

    The shopping centre itself had to close as is succumbed to flood waters.

  12. Anti-terror blocks plan for York Minsterpublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    Work to install a protective barrier with 12 security blocks at the front of York Minster will begin this week.

    The decision to strengthen security was taken by the Chapter of York, the cathedral’s governing body, following recommendations from the Counter Terrorism Unit.

    The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Dr Vivienne Faull said they've been, "concerned about the potential vulnerability of the area around the Minster’s West End for some time".

    Similar blocks are already in use at a number of high profile locations around the country, including the Tower of London (pictured).

    Approved by the Home Office and tested by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, the Minster says the 12 blocks will form "a substantial barrier".

    The security barrier is a temporary measure. The Dean of York says the blocks "can and will be removed if the security situation improves in the future".

  13. 'Riot police' deployed in Leeds to deal with youthspublished at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    Police wearing riot gear were deployed in two areas of Leeds last night to deal with "firework-related disorder".

    West Yorkshire Police say the separate incidents in Harehills and Hyde Park involved groups of youths blocking streets with burning bins.

    Officers with helmet and shields were sent to disperse the youths who also threw fireworks and other objects at emergency services who were first at the scene.

    No one was injured and no property was damaged at either incident on Harehills Road in Harehills and Queens Road in Hyde Park.

    Officers now say they investigating who was taking part in the disturbances and that they will take t"appropriate action against them".

    Some of the world's rarest spiders are making North Yorkshire their new home.

    Staff at Askham Bryan College are involved in a conservation breeding programme to stop the Deserta Wolf Spider becoming extinct and more than 50 spiderlings have now been delivered to the college's wildlife park.

    It's thought there are only about 4,000 Deserta adults left in the wild.

    They are found in one valley on the Deserta Grande Island, near Madeira, and are under threat due to habitat loss.

    The spiders are under the care of wildlife park manager Caroline Howard, who says: "These spiders are rarer than pandas, lions or elephants so we are absolutely delighted to take part in this hugely important conservation programme."

    At present, the spiderlings are tiny - about 4mm in diameter - but they will grow to be about 12cm in size, which is about 5ins.

    New images have been released of how Leeds railway station could look in the future.

    A 25-year project to regenerate the station is described as an "ambitious transformation into a distinctive gateway hub of international significance" by Leeds City Council.

    The masterplan, which was approved by the council last month, includes a new concourse, new platforms, a new roof, footbridge, external landscaping and the creation of a surrounding station "campus" for commercial, residential and leisure developments.

    The founder of a South Yorkshire-based charity pushing for mental health to be part of the school curriculum says it's vital that it happens because of the pressures faced by pupils nowadays.

    MPs are set to debate the issue in Parliament later.

    Adam Shaw, from Sheffield, says the price of not taking action is unthinkable and would do untold damage to pupils for generations.

    Pupils themselves have reported on the need for more mental health support.

    Mr Shaw's charity, the Shaw Mind Foundation, external, has gathered more than 100,000 signatures to make today's parliamentary debate happen:

    A safety review carried out after the Grenfell Tower disaster says a West Yorkshire council needs more staff trained to spot fire risks in people's homes.

    Police believe at least 80 people died when fire engulfed the London tower block in the early hours of 14 June.

    Senior Calderdale councillors are due to meet later to debate the report's finding and to discuss the shortages in trained staff in the district.

    It's expected they'll agree to spend £0.5m on improving fire prevention.

  19. New appeal over York sexual assaultspublished at 09:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    Detectives investigating two sexual assaults which happened on the same day in York have renewed their appeal for information from the public.

    One incident occurred in the Navigation Road area at about 00:30 on Tuesday 26 September, the other happened in the Hull Road area between about midnight and 01:00 on the same day.

    A man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the investigation on 27 September and was later released under investigation.

    Police released the CCTV images of a man they wanted to talk to in connection with the cases shortly afterwards.

    Detectives are still trying to identify the man in the images and are appealing for people to come forward with any information that may help.
