    Rotherham

There's an early morning bustle at Fitzwilliam & Hughes, a Rotherham cafe over-looking the Minster and its gardens.

It's a corner plot in a listed building, it feels like a choice spot, but co-owner Matthew Leather is glum about the town.

"So many businesses have come and gone in the three or four years we've been here. There isn't the footfall or the attractions in Rotherham so they've not been able to last," he says.

"If I didn't have a business in Rotherham I wouldn't come because there's nothing to attract you."

Rotherham Borough Council says it's working on that. Find out more here.

  14. 'It's just ridiculous' - Universal Credit sees rise in number of people using food banks in North Yorkshirepublished at 06:43 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2017

There's been a big rise in the number of people using food banks in parts of North Yorkshire where Universal Credit has been rolled out.

    Foodbank

According to figures by the Trussell Trust food bank network, York has seen an increase of more than a third since changes to the benefit system were introduced earlier in the year.

The charity's now concerned the situation will get worse as Christmas approaches.

Peter Clark, from York, had to wait for over three months for his Universal Credit after losing his job in the summer.

He's told the BBC: "It's supposed to be six weeks for initial payment and now I've waited 15 weeks.

"It's just ridiculous. If it wasn't for the help of my local church community, the help of foodbanks and the help of family, I'd certainly be starving and out of a place to live by now."

The government has promised it will make it easier for people to receive a loan to tide them over while they wait for the benefit to kick in.
