The pit closed in December 2015, bringing to an end the UK's deep mining industry.

Small groups of men who worked there gathered around the former colliery site to watch the demolition.

Stewart Awde said: "It's heartbreaking for the lads because it's been there for 60-70 years and it's been a part of all our lives.

"Since the 1970s, a lot of coal has come up and down that shaft, millions and millions of tonnes. It's kept the economy going and the local power stations."

  7. Are traffic light changes in Leeds causing gridlock on the roads?published at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    Demi Clayton
    BBC Yorkshire Live

Are traffic lights causing increased congestion in Leeds city centre?

    Traffic lights

That claim's been made on the leedsface, external Facebook page and has generated a lively discussion among users.

One poster writes: "Has anyone else noticed the traffic signal sequences in a few key locations around Leeds city centre have been altered over the past few months causing a considerable amount of gridlock around the centre?"

We thought we'd ask Leeds City Council about this and they tell us the traffic signal plans haven't changed.

The increase in traffic could have been affected by the onset of winter, which brings increased traffic volumes and breakdowns on the network, the council says.

Concerns about traffic monitoring strips were also raised, but the council said the strips are placed around the city to monitor traffic growth and to help evaluate the impact of proposed schemes and planning applications.

  19. Watch: Kellingley Colliery demolitionpublished at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

Here's the moment the first of the two landmark head shafts at the former Kellingley Colliery on the North Yorkshire/West Yorkshire border was blown up this morning:

It's almost two years since the final shift at what was Britain's last deep coal mine, with the site now set to be redeveloped to provide manufacturing and distribution space.

Known locally as the Big "K", Kellingley was the largest deep pit in Europe and was once hailed as the new generation of coal mining which could bring up to 900 tonnes of coal an hour to the surface.

However, the site was a victim of a decline in UK coal production with official figures from the Department for Energy and Climate Change showing the UK imported more coal than it produced for the first time in 2001 - a trend repeated every year since 2003.

The site was bought by the Harworth Group, which now wants to build a 95,000sq m employment space.
