Yorkshire's first female bishop has been telling the BBC how excited she is to have been chosen for the role.

The Right Reverend Doctor Helen-Ann Hartley, 44, is to become the area Bishop of Ripon, within the Leeds Diocese.

Bishop Helen-Ann current Diocese is Waikato (pictured above left), but her new position will require her to relocate more than 11,000 miles to Ripon Cathedral.

Earlier this year, the Right Reverend Philip North turned down the role of Bishop of Sheffield, amid protests over his views on women priests.

Bishop Helen-Ann says the decision to appoint her is based on who is right for the role - not what their gender is:

It comes after both authorities agreed yesterday to let voters choose between a Yorkshire or solely South Yorkshire option to gain more local powers.

The government says it's been absolutely clear it won't allow anything to change the plan for a South Yorkshire mayor to be elected in May.

It's asked the councils to decide if it would be "lawful, useful and in the interests of local people" to hold the poll.

According to council documents, holding the poll would cost each authority £120,000, external with votes to be cast either by post or online.

Voting slips are expected be sent out in Barnsley and Doncaster at the beginning of next month, with the result announced on 21 December.

  6. Leeds doctor appeals for an end to NHS 'crisis'published at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

An influential Leeds GP is calling on politicians to step up plans to invest in the health service.

    Richard Vautrey

Doctor Richard Vautrey, who's head of the British Medical Association's GP committee, says the budget of the NHS is "simply too small" and family doctors need to be "seen as a priority".

In a speech later, Doctor Vautrey is expected to acknowledge the government has gone some way to addressing what he's calling a "crisis" in general practice.

In 2013 the NHS spent 7.4% of its budget on general practice, which he describes as "miserly", he says.

  7. Kellingley Colliery: Shaft to be blown up at UK's last deep coal minepublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

The first of the former pit's two head shafts is expected to be blown up later today, almost two years since the final shift at what was Britain's last deep coal mine which closed in December 2015.

Known locally as the "Big K", Kellingley was once hailed as the new generation of coalmining.

At its height, the mine - the largest deep pit in Euorope - employed 2,000 workers and could bring up to 900 tonnes of coal an hour to the surface.

There are plans for the large site to be redeveloped to provide manufacturing and distribution space.

  9. Listen: 'This keeps us safe' - Appeal to keep Mexborough youth centre openpublished at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

A youth centre in one of the most deprived areas of South Yorkshire looks set to close at Christmas if organisers can't get hold of more funding to keep it open.

The Base, on Highwoods Road in Mexborough, has been open for 20 years and in that time thousands of children and young people have been through its doors.

But organisers now say that if money can't be found to keep it open, it'll close at the end of December.

These young people say it's been a lifeline and a "second home" for them:

  10. Traffic and travel: Lofthouse Interchange delays warningpublished at 07:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

If the busy Lofthouse Interchange in West Yorkshire is on your route to work this morning, you might want to set off a little earlier.

  11. Green Party co-leader to rejoin anti-fracking protesterspublished at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

The co-leader of the Green Party is expected to join anti-fracking protesters in North Yorkshire again later.

    Green leader

It's Jonathan Bartley's second visit to the site earmarked for fracking at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

He'll join other Green Party members at the site where Third Energy hopes to start hydraulic fracturing for shale gas by the end of the year.

The Green Party is strongly opposed to fracking and sees Kirby Misperton as the frontline of its fight against it.

Opponents say fracking can cause water contamination, earthquakes and vehicles going to and from the site could lead to noise and traffic pollution.

Third Energy previously said the process at its well, sunk for conventional gas extraction in 2013, would be carried out without disruption and with minimal impact.

It follows the devastating fire at Grenfell Tower in London in June in which it's thought 80 people died.

Eight buildings in West Yorkshire have since failed cladding safety tests, including three in Halifax.

A BBC Breakfast investigation which focused on half the UK's council and housing association-owned tower blocks found just 2% have full sprinkler systems.

Of those, 68% have just one staircase through which to evacuate.

A public inquiry will look at the causes of the fire, the adequacy of high-rise regulations, Grenfell Tower's refurbishment, and the actions of public authorities before and after the blaze.
