  4. Canal dredged for first time in 100 yearspublished at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

Parts of an abandoned canal near York are being dredged for the first time in more than 100 years.

Pocklington Canal is to have a mile-long non-navigable section cleared by an amphibious dredger.

CanalImage source, Canal and River Trust

But the Canal and River Trust isn't doing the work to help boat owners sail up the waterway.

By clearing silt and reeds to create an open channel, the charity hopes to encourage rare aquatic plants and wildlife that have declined due to the reeds and tree shading.

About 15 species of dragonflies and damselflies live on the canal, said the trust.

The project is due to finish by the end of December.

  5. Lack of funding could close Barnsley drop-in centrepublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

A project that's been helping homeless and vulnerable people in Barnsley for nearly fifteen years will close next year, unless it can raise enough money to survive.

    Homeless person

The Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project provides cooked meals and hands out donated toiletries, clothing and sleeping bags as well as providing a listening ear to those who need it.

Kate Raynor from the charity said: "The project isn't just about feeding people when they're hungry, it gives people a bit of hope and shows them that someone cares about them."

The drop-in centre moved into new premises at Temperance House on Pitt Street early this year but higher costs and a lack of available grants means the charity's future looks uncertain.

  6. Listen: Leeds mum backs £250,000 cancer cottage campaignpublished at 09:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2017

A mum from Leeds, who lost twin baby girls to cancer, is backing a campaign to renovate a house for families to live in, while their children are being treated in hospital.

Children's cancer charity, Candlelighters, wants to raise £250,000 to undertake major renovations on a house they've bought near Leeds General Infirmary.

The current home from home provision, at Leeds Children's Hospital, has an average of ten families on a waiting list each night.

Clare Boitelle says their time away from home lasted seven months and a place to stay near the hospital is vital:

CCTV images show him in Tower Street at about 00:40.
