    Sarah Lancashire, star of Calderdale-based BBC TV drama Happy Valley, says she was thrilled and "slightly speechless" after receiving her OBE at Buckingham Palace earlier.

    Lancashire, who was given the accolade by the Duke of Cambridge for services to drama, said she had been nervous before the ceremony because "I don't do things like this very easily".

    The Bafta-winning actor has also recently starred in Last Tango in Halifax, another West Yorkshire-based BBC drama.

    Lancashire says she hopes there are more of the shows, which were both written by Huddersfield's Sally Wainwright, to come.

    "Happy Valley is unfinished business so we have to go back and finish that off. And Tango is always a delight. We've sort of become a family away from the screen as well so it's a lovely piece to work on," she says.

    A man's died after a car and a lorry collided this morning near Boroughbridge.

    The collision happened at about 05:30 in a lay-by on the A168 at Stump Cross.

    It involved an HGV lorry and a black Skoda Fabia.

    A 38-year-old man, who's from the Cleveland area, died at the scene.

    Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to contact police.

    They say they're investigating possible links to what officers describe as "historic criminal activity" but aren't saying what it might be.

    Excavations will be part of the work, and police say they could be on the site, off Stockbridge Lane, for about a week.

    At least six ambulances are currently parked up on Briggate, Leeds' main shopping street.

    Details are sketchy, but west Yorkshire Police say they were called out because of "concerns for the safety" of a man.

    The ringleader of a grooming gang who raped and abused teenage girls in South Yorkshire has been found guilty of assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

    Arshid Hussain, 42, formerly of Goole, was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court of goading the girl into performing a sex act in 2003.

    Hussain is already serving a 35-year term after he was convicted of 23 counts of abuse.

    He was jailed for seven years for the latest offence, which will run concurrent to the previous sentence.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, external for heavy rain in parts of Yorkshire tomorrow.

    Spray and flooding on roads is expected to make journey times longer in Harrogate, Calderdale and Kirklees.

    Bus and train services may also be disrupted.

    Strong winds are also expected which could add to the difficult travel conditions.

  8. Petition calls for eviction of anti-fracking protesterspublished at 13:01 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2017

    An online petition has been launched calling for anti-fracking protesters to be evicted from their camp at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering in North Yorkshire.

    So far it has 280 signatures.

    Last February officials at Ryedale District Council began investigations into the camp after receiving 12 complaints.

    Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure fluid mixture is directed at rock to release the gas inside.

    Opponents say it can cause water contamination, earthquakes and vehicles going to and from the site could lead to noise and traffic pollution.

    Third Energy has not received final consent to begin fracking, but expects to start before the end of the year.

    Two houses in Barnsley have seen tight controls put in place on who can go inside.

    They're on Gerald Road and Don Drive in Kendray and the action comes after repeated drug crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.

    Now, only the tenants as well as council and NHS staff can enter the two houses.

    The house in South Yorkshire is enormous; its facade is wider than that of Buckingham Palace.

    It has 365 rooms, one for each day of the year.

    So imagine trimming the place up for Christmas.

  11. Watch: Moment man shot and stabbed outside Leeds clubpublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2017

    CCTV footage has been released of a gun and knife attack on a man outside a Leeds nightclub - three men were jailed for attempted murder yesterday.

    A 42-year-old man was was stabbed and shot in the chest from just a few feet away and had to undergo surgery after the attack at the Nite Trax club, on Chapeltown Road, on 29 August last year.

    People were celebrating the Leeds West Indian Carnival weekend when it happened, but police say they still don't know why the man was attacked.

    Shaquille Liddie, 24, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and was jailed for 14 years.

    Kemar Ricketts, 28, of no fixed abode and Seion Allen, 33, also of no fixed abode, were both found guilty of attempted murder and were both sentenced to 19 years imprisonment.

    Yorkshire is the region hit hardest by government spending cuts over the past five years.

    BBC News has found that the north of England has been affected the most, while every other part of the country has seen a rise.

    In the last year, the region lost £730m in public spending in real terms, compared to the previous year.

    Since 2010, West Yorkshire Police has lost over 1,000 police officers because of budget cuts to services.

    Labour has called on the government to end its austerity programme in the budget on Wednesday.

    A Treasury spokesperson said every region in England is funded fairly.

    The jury at the coroner's inquest into the murder of Leeds teacher Ann Maguire has been sent out after hearing five days of evidence.

    Mrs Maguire died in April 2014 after being stabbed seven times at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds by 15-year-old pupil Will Cornick.

    Cornick was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 20 years in custody.

    A mock crash between a motorbike and a tram has been staged in Sheffield to test the response of the emergency services.

    In the exercise, a motorscooter rider became "trapped" under one of the new CityLink trams.

    At least 120 weapons have been handed in to North Yorkshire Police in the first week of a national firearms surrender, it's been revealed.

    The weapons amnesty gives members of the public the chance to dispose of a firearm or ammunition by simply taking it to a local designated police station and handing it in anonymously.

    Police are also accepting other weapons including knives, ammunition and other offensive weapons.

    Police are currently excavating a site in Doncaster as they investigate what detectives are calling "possible historic criminal activity in the area".

    The dig is happening on land off Stockbridge Lane in Bentley and the work is expected to last for up to a week.

    Police say they've executed a warrant to carry out the dig, but won't say what sort of crime could be involved.

    Officers are working with a private contractor to conduct a "methodical and detailed search" of the area, according to police.

    Someone living in Leeds is exactly £1m richer today after they cashed in a previously unclaimed Lottery ticket.

    The EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker prize was drawn on 24 October but no-one came forward with a winning ticket at the time.

    The name of the winner hasn't been released, but I'm sure they've already bought a top hat and a cane as they join the millionaire's club.

    Andy Carter from The National Lottery said: “It would have been awful if the ticket-holder had missed out on this life-changing amount of money."

    It's been announced this morning that Gary Barlow is bringing his solo UK tour to Scarborough Open Air Theatre next summer.

    He is coming to the North Yorkshire coast on Friday 22 June.

    It's not the first time he's performed in the town.

    He played Scarborough's Futurist Theatre with Take That - and returned to the same venue as a solo artist in 2013.

    Police have issued CCTV footage of this person (pictured) they want to speak to after an assault on a 24-year-old man who suffered a broken cheek bone and eye socket.

    The assault was at 01.15 on Sunday in The Blackamoor Head pub on Finkle Street, Selby.

    The 24-year-old male victim was crossing the dance floor when an altercation took place between him and three men.

    Police say the victim was hit in the face which resulted in serious facial injuries.

    Police want to speak to the man in these CCTV images.
