    People who have holiday homes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park could end up paying more council tax.

    Craven District Council leader Richard Foster said that community sustainability had become a pressing concern – and that one of the key ways to tackle it was by addressing the impact of second homes.

    He said he was working with Richmondshire District Council’s leader and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority chairman to develop the idea for wider debate

    In a 2011 census 22% of homes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park were either holiday lets or second homes.

    A detailed proposal is being outlined for an national park authority meeting on 19 December 2017.

    A man has been charged with the murder of a woman from Halifax.

    Monika Lasek, 36, died following an incident at Solstice Way on Sunday.

    A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder and has now been charged.

    He is due to appear at Bradford Magistrates Court on tomorrow.

    If you live in the Harrogate area and have been trying to deal with various departments you'll know how frustrating it can be to have to visit several buildings to deal with any issues.

    From Monday Harrogate Borough Council's new customer service centre will open.

    It is based in the new civic centre just off King's Road in the town.

    You will be able to access a range of services in one location.

    The body of an alleged murder victim was seen by a neighbour being loaded into a car, a court has heard

    Lydia Gunning told a jury at Leeds Crown Court the scene in the early hours of 14 May was "very similar to what you see in the movies".

    The remains of Sinead Wooding, 26, were found in woodland in Leeds a few hours later. Her body had been set on fire.

    Her husband Akshar Ali and Yasmin Ahmed, both 27, deny murdering Ms Wooding at Ms Ahmed's home in Leeds.

    A pathologist's report said mother-of-four Ms Wooding had been beaten with a hammer and stabbed.

    The trial continues.

    Wheelchair basketball players who will represent GB in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are now training in their new home in South Yorkshire.

    Three branches of a bank have been targeted in North Yorkshire by anti-fracking protesters.

    Branches of Barclays Bank in Scarborough, Whitby and Ripon (pictured) were defaced with anti-fracking slogans because of their link with Third Energy, the company behind fracking operations in Kirby Misperton.

    A Barclays spokesperson said "Through Global Natural Resources Investments, Barclays has a majority stake in Third Energy".

    The bank added “We are conscious of the concerns of local communities and other groups over potential environmental and community impacts, which we take seriously and will continue to monitor."

    Work to cut down trees in Sheffield is going to be starting earlier in the day.

    Sheffield City Council say they will support contractors Amey starting work before 07:00 to ensure work is carried out in the safest way possible.

  14. Any bright ideas on street lighting in Leeds?published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

    People in Leeds are being asked how the city can save money and energy on street lights.

    There are 92,000 of them around Leeds and the city council say it costs £4m a year to keep them lit.

    They either want to turn some of the lights off between midnight and 05:30 or convert them to LED (light-emitting diode).

    About 4,000 of the street lights are currently turned off from midnight which saves £136,000 a year in energy costs.

    The council says that their "challenging current financial position" has made them look at how street lights work - you can take part in the consultation here, external.

  15. Police statement: Divers in search for Angela Simmonitepublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

    Police divers are now being used in the search for the missing Sheffield woman Angela Simmonite.

    In a statement this afternoon, Chief Insp Lydia Lynskey said that more than 50 officers were also scanning through CCTV images and making house-to-house inquiries to piece together Angela's movements.

    A CCTV image taken from about 08:15 on the day Angela went missing shows her walking on Wincobank Avenue walking towards Newman Road.

    Angela left her home last Saturday between the hours of 05:00 and 09:00.

    Police investigating the suspected murder of a woman in Halifax at the weekend have named the victim.

    Polish national Monika Lasek, aged 36, died after an incident on Solstice Way in the town on Sunday.

    A 35-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody.

    More than 150 people will be made redundant in Leeds after major UK wholesaler Palmer and Harvey (P&H) went into administration

    The company had been in takeover talks with private equity firm Carlyle, but these fell through and now 156 of the 183 people who work at the Leeds site will lose their jobs.

    Twenty-seven employees will be kept on as the firm is wound down.

    P&H, which is the UK's largest tobacco supplier, had been struggling with debts and owed substantial sums to key suppliers.

    It is the UK's fifth biggest privately-owned firm and delivers more than 12,000 products including food and alcohol supplying 90,000 outlets around the UK including major chains.
