A group of volunteers organised the dinner for care leavers aged between 18 and 25-years-old after being inspired by the success of author Lemn Sissay, who founded the project in Manchester in 2015.

The group's now seeking the support of the community to raise money and secure a location for the event.

Ruby Robinson, one of the organisers, says: "There are people from the age of 18 on wards who are no longer in foster care and no longer in the children's home and they don't necessarily have a family or support network to go to at that time in their young adult life."

Leeds developer CEG says it's "agreed terms to acquire" the Grade I-listed building on Marshall street.

The company says the building will require "creative and innovative ideas" to bring it back to life and that it aims to work closely with Leeds City council to renovate it.

When it was announced last month that the building would go up for auction with no reserve, heritage campaigners expressed concern for the future of "one of the most important historical buildings in Leeds".

    Quote Message

We are pleased to become the custodian of an important element of the city's historic culture and look forward to working with Leeds City Council to progress the regeneration of this challenging site."

Bradford Council's executive has agreed to back a £20m plan to redevelop the city's former Odeon site.

It said the development was "not financially viable without some form of funding from the council".

Bradford Live, which runs the project, said the loan was the "single most important part of the funding jigsaw".

Bradford Live was awarded the project to redevelop the building by the council in 2014 and in September it was announced the NEC Group would run the venue.

The company, which runs the National Exhibition Centre and other venues in Birmingham, will contribute £2m towards the project.

  13. Businessman wins damages over 'threat to kill' claimspublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

Raj Dhir, 75, brought the slander claim against Bronte Saddler, who is also in her 70s and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Woodhouse (pictured).

The court heard how a son of Mrs Saddler was involved in an on-off relationship with Mr Dhir's daughter and this had caused friction between the families.

In July 2015, 90 members of the church gathered to hear the family's complaint about the Saddlers and during this meeting Mrs Saddler alleged that Mr Dhir "threatened to slit my throat".

The judge, giving his ruling in London, said he was quite satisfied that the seriousness of the allegation and the circumstances of its publication were such that Mr Dhir had demonstrated that serious harm had been caused to his reputation.

He said damages must be sufficient to satisfy any bystander that there was nothing in the allegation and the "appropriate and proportionate" award was £35,000.

  15. Watch: Sheffield primary school's teachers on strikepublished at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

Teachers at Westways Primary School in Sheffield have held the first of four planned strikes over what's been described as "excessive workloads and scrunity".

The striking teachers, who are members of the National Education Union (NEU), say this has led to a drop in moral and teachers being off sick.

Sam Fearnehough, the school's new headteacher, says the majority of staff "do not support strike action" and he says the school's governors are "saddened the NEU has chosen to continue to induce its members to strike rather than meet to talk".

Louise Regan, National President of the NUT, has been on the picket line today and she explains why she's supporting the teachers on strike:

  18. Are mobile banks solution to North Yorks branch closures?published at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

Figures showed that over the past year, 27 banks in North Yorkshire have closed their doors or are due to close in the near future.

Following the research, the mayor of Kirkbymoorside said mobile bank branches could act as the solution to the issue:

    Quote Message

I think it would be a good marketing ploy. They won't have the big overheads of a branch. They could have a mobile banking team that goes round and they could service four or five towns in a week, so you're keeping that local connection."

Councillor Angus Ashworth, Mayor of Kirkbymoorside
