    Sandra Major, who worked for the murdered West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox, and was with her when she died, has received an MBE today.

    Mrs Major was given her award at Buckingham Palace by the Prince of Wales.

    She carried on working for Mrs Cox's constituents despite her shock and grief following the murder.

    She was honoured for her parliamentary services and service to the community of Batley and Spen.

    Sheffield United have confirmed that they'll submit plans to Sheffield City Council to expand their Bramall Lane stadium in late December or early January next year.

    It would involve adding 5,400 seats to the south stand, taking capacity over 38,000 and there would also be a new media centre and executive boxes.

    The project was originally given "outline consent" back in 2009.

    A decision on these plans is expected in spring 2018.

    South Yorkshire Police are asking young artists from across the area to grab their crayons and colouring pencils and design them a Christmas card.

    Children under 12 can take part with the winner having their drawing used in the force's official Christmas card for 2017.

    The government's come under pressure over delays to new flood protection for York.

    It's two years since the December floods of 2015 when hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes.

    The Labour MP for York Central, Rachael Maskell, told the Commons this morning residents must not be left at risk:

  6. Conservative dinner at Coal Mining Museum cancelledpublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    A Conservative dinner due to be held at the National Coal Mining Museum (NCMM) in Wakefield has been cancelled after being described as being in poor taste by the National Union of Mineworkers.

    In a statement, the museum says trustees decided to stop the dinner from happening after taking advice from the company who run their events.

    The NCMM highlighted that it is a "publicly funded museum" and a need to "maintain a position of political neutrality".

    The dinner was scheduled for the 10 March next year, two days after the anniversary of the return to work at the end of the Miners’ Strike in 1985.

    Critics labelled it as politically insensitive.

  7. High Court rules Sheffield man must face second trialpublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    A man from Sheffield who had been cleared of using racist language in front a police officer is to face a retrial.

    Richie Smith, 45, was cleared of charges relating to an incident at St Pancras International Railway Station in London, following a drunken train journey from South Yorkshire to the capital.

    It is the High Court who had decided that this re-trial should take place, with Lord Justice Bean ruling that his intoxication was irrelevant to the question of guilt or innocence.

    Susan Wright, for Mr Smith, argued there was "no evidence of anyone else having been in earshot", other than his own associates, however the judge said he "could not agree" with the magistrates that Mr Smith had "no case to answer".

    The case has been sent back to the magistrates court for re-hearing.

  8. Yorkshire men jailed in India now home with familiespublished at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    Three men from Yorkshire who've spent four years locked up in an Indian prison are back at home with their families this afternoon.

    Nicholas Simpson from Catterick, Paul Towers from Pocklington and Ray Tindall, who is originally from Hull, were detained while working as security guards on a ship.

    They were cleared of weapons charges and released from jail on Tuesday, along with three other men.

    Four years ago they were jailed on charges of smuggling weapons and ammunition.

    The men won an appeal against their convictions last week.

    A Conservative dinner that was due to be held at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield will no longer go ahead after a protest.

    The Dewsbury Conservative Association rejected the suggestion of them trying to upset former miners by using the venue which would have been held near to the anniversary of the end of the miners strike next March.

    In a statement, the event organiser Asparagus Green have said that in light of complaints and comments the company's priority "must be to safeguard staff, visitors and the Museum property".

    It is unknown whether a replacement venue has been confirmed or not.

    Earlier today we bought you the news that plans to turn Sheffield's Central Library into a five star hotel is now in doubt.

    It's now understood that a new library will be constructed elsewhere in city centre and Sheffield City Council have released an artist's impression as to what the new site might look like:

    The site of the current library on Surrey Street now looks set to be turned into a "cultural hub".

  11. Appeal to HGV driver to come forward following A1 crashpublished at 13:01 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    The driver of an HGV is being asked by police to come forward after a collision on the A1 in the early hours of this morning.

    It happened at about 01:20 on the northbound carriageway between junction 47 (Allerton Park) and junction 48 (Boroughbridge), when an HGV with a white trailer attached collided with a silver Nissan Juke.

    Officers say the HGV did not stop at the scene and the driver may be unaware he or she was involved in a collision.

    Officers are appealing to HGV drivers who were on the A1 northbound at the time and place of the collision to contact them.

    The occupants of the Nissan, a man, woman and two children, were uninjured.

    The central barrier of the motorway was slightly damaged as a result of the collision.

    People in South Yorkshire are being asked for their help in finding a man who's gone missing from Newark in Nottinghamshire.

    Colin Muress, 50, has been missing for several days and new CCTV images show he was on Glossop Street in Sheffield city centre on Wednesday last week.

    He was spotted wearing a Sheffield United hat and is known to have connections to Sheffield, Rotherham, Woodhouse and Hathersage.

    Mr Muress also has a golden Labrador called Harvey with him.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police.

    Children at a primary school in Bradford will get to meet the stars of a new Pakistani film later today.

    The cast of Rangreza will be going to Crossley Hall Primary School ahead of the film's release on 21 December.

    The children will learn about film making and get to meet Pakistan's rising stars of the big screen Bilal Ashraf, Urwa Hocane and film actor Gohar Rasheed and Music director Akhtar Qayyum.

    The good news for the pupils at the school is the cast will also be handing out Christmas gifts!

    The chair of York City Supporters trust says the long delay to the city's new community stadium has been a "ridiculous length of time".

    It's been 15 years since the idea of a new ground was first mentioned.

    Work's started on the £36m development at Monk's Cross, which will be home to both the city's football and rugby league clubs.

    The ground is due to be completed in 2019, but John Lacy says the delays have had a detrimental impact on both clubs:

    A police vehicle has been involved in a collision in Huddersfield while responding to an emergency call.

    The officers' vehicle collided with a silver Vauxhall Corsa on Old Wakefield Road in the town.

    The incident happened at about 08:30 this morning.

    Two female officers in the police vehicle and the 33-year-old female driver of the Corsa received minor injuries.

    They have been taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for assessment.

    The road was closed while the vehicles involved in the incident were recovered.

    British Transport Police say there's been a fuel leak on a service at Helpston Junction between Peterborough and Grantham.

    Passengers are still on the train at the moment, according to Network Rail.

    England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow has been given a pair of wicket keeping gloves that his late father played in nearly 40 years ago.

    The Yorkshire glovesman is the son of former player David Bairstow, who committed suicide in January 1998.

    The whole event came about after cricket fan Andrew Johns won the gloves as a prize during England's Ashes tour to Australia in 1978, with David Bairstow a part of the England squad.

    Mr Johns had kept the gloves in a box for nearly 40 years before handing them to Jonny Bairstow during the second Ashes test in Adelaide earlier this week with Bairstow junior saying this gift was a "fantastic gesture".

    Jeremy Dyson has been talking to the BBC ahead of three new episodes of the League of Gentlemen which are being shown on BBC Two this Christmas.

    The Leeds-born actor returns to Royston Vasey with fellow cast members Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith to celebrate 20 years of the show.

    Here's a sneak peak as to what's in store:

    Filming for the programmes has taken place at locations across the UK, including several spots in Yorkshire and Dyson says the team have "just tried to make it as it was originally, which is about trying to make the others laugh".

    You can see the first episode on Monday 18 December at 22:00 on BBC Two.
