  4. North Yorkshire smaller fire crews decision reversedpublished at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

North Yorkshire's fire and rescue authority has voted to increase crews to four firefighters on some fire engines, reversing a 2015 decision.

The move follows a row over the introduction of smaller Tactical Response Vehicles (TRVs) carrying a crew of three.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said having just three firefighters was a "threat to public safety".

It welcomed the "ground-breaking decision" to boost crew numbers.

The brigade introduced six TRVs in 2016 to replace six standard fire engines crewed by four or five firefighters.

The decision was made to save about £1.5m a year and led to industrial action by FBU members.

Four firefighters are now to crew the TRVs at Malton, Tadcaster, Northallerton and Ripon, said the authority.

  15. Campaigners 'devastated' over memorial trees decisionpublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Tree campaigners say they are "devastated" by Sheffield City Council's decision to replace 41 memorial trees.

Trees have been felled across the cityImage source, PA

The trees were originally planted on Western Road in 1919 to honour local soldiers who died during World War One.

The council made the decision last night during a public meeting and says it will replace the existing 41 trees and will plant about 300 more in the city's parks.

Campaigner David Garlovsky said: "I'm devastated. They are a life part of our city. They are better for our health and well-being, it affects our air pollution and Sheffield has one of the highest rates of air pollution in the country."

The trees are being felled as part of Sheffield City Council's £2bn Streets Ahead project, which the authority says is to improve roads and footpaths in the city. About 5,500 trees have been cut down since 2012.

The authority insists those earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

However, campaigners claim many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.
