The schools are not registered or following a national curriculum and, in some cases, are teaching intolerant views to children.

Inspectors have found literature in some which is misogynistic and homophobic, the watchdog said.

Ofsted regional director Cathy Kirby said she was "worried".

"It's not just about the learning materials, it's the condition of the premises, often where they're not really appropriate settings and accommodations to have children educated," she said.

However, it was not a "hugely widespread thing in the northeast for us to be concerned about", she added.

West Lindsey District Council said the Travelodge, in Keighley, West Yorkshire, would generate extra income.

Critics said the authority should have consulted with residents on the deal, and looked to invest in its own area.

The authority, which has its headquarters in Gainsborough, said it wanted to protect local services and the hotel was bought with funds from its own internal borrowing.

Council leader Jeff Summers said: "It was obvious we either had to make serious cuts to services... or go into the commercial world and generate an income for the council."

High Storrs School in Sheffield said running courses for the small classes is "no longer financially viable".

The crowd funding campaign has already raised more than £5,000.

Prof Beard, professor of Classics at Cambridge University, said: "I am right behind any efforts to keep classical subjects in schools."

High Storrs is thought to be the only state school in Sheffield still offering Classics and Latin as subjects, although class sizes are small.

  20. Sheffield Council votes against saving memorial treespublished at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Dozens of trees planted in honour of fallen soldiers in Sheffield will be replaced because it would be too expensive to save them, the city's council has said.

    TreeImage source, PA

Campaigners have fought a long battle with the authority over the fate of the "living memorial" in Western Road.

At a public meeting last night, it was decided the 41 trees, planted in 1919, would be removed and replanted.

Campaigners said the £500,000 estimate to save the trees was a "joke".

The trees, planted in honour of local soldiers who died in World War One, are due to be cut down as part of Streets Ahead, a £2bn project which Sheffield Council says is to improve roads and footpaths.

About 5,500 trees have been cut down in the city since 2012.

The authority insists those earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

However, campaigners claim many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.
