    Two protesters accused of blocking a road near a site earmarked for fracking in North Yorkshire have appeared before York Magistrates.

    North Yorkshire Police removed campaigners from wooden towers put up on Habton Road in Kirby Misperton in October.

    A 56-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were bailed until 1 February.

    They're charged with causing a danger to road users and obstructing a police officer.

    A house has been badly damaged in an arson attack in North Yorkshire.

    The fire broke out in the lounge of the three-storey terraced house in Howe End, Kirbymoorside, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

    The fire service says it's believed to have been started at about 21:00 last night deliberately.

  4. Leeds death crash: Funeral held for teenagerpublished at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    The funeral has taken place today of a teenager killed in a "catastrophic" car crash that claimed five lives.

    Darnell Harte, 15, died when the stolen Renault Clio he was in hit a tree in Stonegate Road, Meanwood, Leeds, at 21:54 on 25 November.

    His funeral was held at St Martin’s Church in Leeds this morning, followed by cremation.

    The others who died in the crash were Ellis, 12, and Elliott Thornton-Kimmitt, 14, Anthony Armour and Robbie Meerun, both 24.

    A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to his age, was charged with five counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Inquests into the deaths of the five who died have been opened and adjourned.

  5. Richard III car park granted national statuspublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    The council car park in Leicester, where the remains of Richard III were found five years ago has been protected as a nationally-important archaeological site.

    He was originally interred at the church of the Greyfriars, a 13th-Century monastic friary.

    The church appears to have been demolished during the reign of Henry VIII.

    Back in 2014 campaigners lost their legal fight for the King's remains to be returned to Yorkshire.

    More than 11,000 people signed a petition calling for him to be reintered in York Minster instead of Leicester.

    Richard, the last monarch of the House of York, grew up at Middleham Castle in the Yorkshire Dales and visited York several times during his short reign.

    A woman was left with a black eye an a bruise on her face after she was attacked at a Yorkshire railway station.

    It happened earlier this month at Doncaster station.

    A woman in her 30s got on a train at Rotherham and while on the train she was involved in an argument with a group of other women.

    When the train arrived at Doncaster the argument continued onto the platform and she was punched in the face, leaving her with a black eye and a bruised cheek.

    Channel 4 relocating out of London would give a "clear benefit to the country" says Culture Secretary Karen Bradley.

    Talking to MPs earlier Ms Bradley said the government were "still in discussions" about a move and said as a publicly-owned broadcaster Channel 4 was expected to deliver "public benefits above and beyond commercial benefits".

    Labour former minister David Hanson said he preferred the broadcaster moving to Salford - but Sheffield, Leeds and Birmingham are also places of interest and that the move needs to be done.

    A Doctor Who special will be the first screening at Bradford's disused Odeon cinema for 17 years.

    The Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time, stars Peter Capaldi with David Bradley as the first Doctor.

    The old cinema will host two separate showings exclusively for fans who won tickets in a BBC ballot.

    Film expert David Wison, of Bradford Unesco City of Film, said tomorrow's screening would be a "big day for the building".

    A bookmakers in Elland was targeted by robbers armed with a crowbar last night.

    The incident happened at 20:50 at the Betfred bookmakers on Southgate when two men threatened staff and a customer.

    The men took money and walked out towards Coronation Road.

    Police say they looking for two white men, both just under 6ft tall, of medium build and wearing dark grey hoodies, black gloves and black scarves over their faces.

  13. Three Rotherham men arrested sex abuse inquirypublished at 11:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    Three men have been arrested by officers investigating historical sexual abuse.

    The men, aged 37, 41 and 46, from Rotherham, were held on suspicion of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child under 16.

    The National Crime Agency said the offences were alleged to have been committed against two girls in Rotherham and Manchester.

    The men have been released under investigation.

    A grandmother pushing her 10-month-old granddaughter in a pram has died after being hit by a car that mounted the pavement in Leeds.

    The 66-year-old was hit on Church Avenue in Horsforth at 15:30 yesterday - the child was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

    The driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was later bailed.

    The grandmother was given emergency treatment at the scene and the air ambulance was called but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

    A dog that she was walking was also injured and taken to vets for treatment.

    Officers have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision, which happened on a bend outside the Brownlee Arms pub, to get in touch.

    Loneliness is driving some older people in West Yorkshire to exaggerate illnesses so they'll get some company by going in to hospital.

    That's according to Age UK Leeds, which supports people back off the wards through its Hospital to Home service.

    The service helps residents aged 60+ who've attended A&E, or had a short stay in hospital, at St James Hospital in Leeds.

    Volunteers meet someone at their home, check it is warm and safe, undertake some minor practical tasks and provide emotional reassurance.

    A Leeds market trader who had boiling water thrown in her face by a rough sleeper says she's reached an exciting point in her campaign to help homeless people.

    Manjit Kaur started an online appeal for raffle prizes after the incident with all the proceeds going to the local charity Simon on the Streets.

    Other businesses have rallied round and donated more than 100 raffle prizes.

    The draw is being made later at a special night market by BBC Radio Leeds presenter, Johnny I'Anson.

    A man in Bradford was left with fractured ribs after an attacker hit him with a tyre wrench and police want to speak to this man about the incident:

    The incident happened on Grantham Road last month and detectives say it could be linked to a Ford Focus which drove near the 28-year-old victim 15 minutes before.

    The man was left with fractured ribs and bruises.

    Officers say the attacker ran off towards Laisteridge Lane and may have then gone towards Great Horton Road.

    A 70-year-old Leeds woman was pushed to the ground in a "vile" robbery and police want to speak to this man about it:

    The attack happened in October, but officers have only just released this CCTV image.

    The woman was pushed over during the robbery and had her handbag stolen on Kirkstall Lane in Kirkstall.

    West Yorkshire Police say they want the man in the picture to come forward.

  19. Festive felons hampered by Christmas police rusepublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    Twenty-one criminals have been arrested in two days after falling for a set up by South Yorkshire Police.

    The criminals were duped after the force sent out fake vouchers which claimed they had been specially selected to receive a free Christmas hamper.

    In order to receive the hamper they were required to book a delivery slot, but the only thing to arrive during their requested delivery time were police officers to make an arrest.

    Those arrested on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 December were wanted in relation to serious charges including supplying an illegal article into prison, dangerous driving, drink-driving, assault and fraud.
