It marks the success of a campaign to get tourism signs pointing to Richmond replaced following upgrade work on the A1.

Rishi Sunak, the MP for Richmond, took up the issue after long-standing signs to "Richmond – Georgian Market Town" were removed from the Scotch Corner junction during the work.

Highways England initially refused to replace the signs, arguing they were not necessary and did not meet current regulations for brown tourism signs.

Highways England has agreed to pay for the Scotch Corner signs, which also point to Swaledale and Wenseydale, after Mr Sunak argued the local community had suffered because of the year-long delay to the upgrade project.
