The stench of the drains is making local residents' eyes, nose, chest and heads sore, according to people in Nether Edge and Sharrow.

Now, Green Party councillor Alison Teal says she wants to hear from anyone else who lives near smelly drains and is feeling ill.

It follows complaints by Glen Road resident David Thomas, who believes his chronic health problems are related to prolonged contact with gases coming from the local combined sewer and from contamination of groundwater.

Yorkshire Water, which is responsible for the drains, says it has carried out numerous surveys.

In a statement, the firm says: "Local sewer investigations and odour tests do not reveal any abnormalities.

"However, we intend to install a trap which will help stop any potential odours from entering the houses."

A stretch of road in East Yorkshire regarded by some cyclists as the jewel in the crown of time trial racing can still be used by racers after a plan to ban them was scrapped.

    A cyclist joining the A63

Highways England applied for a Traffic Regulation Order to stop cyclists using the A63 between Hull and North Cave over safety concerns.

The organisation has now said a ban will not be introduced on the road, which forms part of the v718 time trial course - a 10-mile route seen as one of the fastest in the country.

Highways England says it made the decision after applications for cycling time trials along the route were withdrawn.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "We are already developing more cycling and safety improvements for the A63 and in the meantime we urge all road users to use this route safely."
