The European Air Quality Index, external showed a spike in pollutants in the air over the weekend in both Leeds and Sheffield.

The pollution almost certainly came from people lighting bonfires and fireworks, according to Dr Carly Reddington from the University of Leeds.

"I saw the numbers this morning and they're really high. I actually couldn't believe how high they were last night," she told the BBC.

"The levels last night were dangerous. They've reached so high where advice for people with asthma should be to stay indoors," she added.

The lack of wind and humid air means the pollution will remain for a little while, but levels are dropping, Dr Reddington adds.

The authority has backtracked on a vote last year to fell the 99-year-old memorial trees on Western Road.

At the time of that vote, the council said it would cost too much money to save them.

Now, 32 of the 35 war memorial trees which were originally earmarked for replacement will stay, with contractors Amey picking up the bill.

The trees were planted in honour of local soldiers who died in World War One, but were due to be cut down as part of a £2bn road and footpath improvement project.

The council has insisted only trees which were dead, diseased, or causing damage would be felled, though this has been disputed by those opposed to the project.

The widow and son of Michael Wike, who died in 1991, were forced to scrabble around in a pile of damaged stones to locate his inscribed memorial at Huddersfield Crematorium in Fixby.

On failing to find it, they were told by staff it had been destroyed and the pieces sent for landfill.

Mr Wike's wife, Tracie Ogilvie, of Kirkheaton, says she was "destroyed" by the discovery, which occurred on the 27th anniversary of his death as they arrived to lay flowers.

It is understood that Kirklees Council sent out a letter last year notifying relatives of the dead that memorial stones at the crematorium were to be re-located.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said the leases for the kerb plaques expired in January 2017 and gave relatives the option of buying a new lease.

"I fully appreciate how distressing this can be for families, and we have attempted to contact all of the families we have records for to try to come to a suitable solution," the spokesman said.

"In this case we wrote to the Ogilvie family through the contact name we had, with the aim of avoiding a situation like this, which we regret."

The Oxmardyke crossing, near Gilberdyke, was shut last night as part of a £50m signalling upgrade.

It means some drivers will have to take a six mile (10km) detour down a single track road, which the parish council says is dangerous and not suitable for extra traffic.

The Humber Bridge Board has revealed a £30m, 10-year-plan for the crossing, which it says will be entirely self-funded with none of the cash coming from toll charges.

The proposals also include running hard-hat tours to the top of the north tower in the short-term and eventually building rides over and under the road.
